View Full Version : Luke's Skis Donations

Here is my initial proposal/thoughts. I'd welcome any and all critiques and other options.
First of all, we (or Luke) have an option to deal direct with Black Diamond. This would be slightly less $ but would likely have to wait until fall to get the equipment. Another option (thanks icelanticskier) is thru EMS at a good discount. Stuff is in stock now.
I have emailed Luke asking him if he has a paypal account and/or if he minds me posting his email info here. So far no response.
I am volunteering my services as a "fund accountant". I have a paypal account that will strictly be used for this purpose. I have transferred my personal donation to this account and also have a couple friends down my way who will be adding to the account. RR, as he previously posted, will also be adding. I totally understand this is a bit of a leap of faith and that's why I welcome other suggestions.
I will provide updates as to the amount in the account on this thread regularly (every couple days anyway). Also, I can provide to anyone who donates all my personal contact info. As we get near the needed dollars, I will then transfer the monies to the appropriate party. We can also decide if we want to go ahead with getting the equipment for him or just give him cash/EMS gift cards or something like that.
Anyway, as of today there is $58 in the account. The email to use is djming@aol.com.
Again, please comment away or feel free to PM me. (or of course, just send $$:))

I have been in touch with Tyler at Black Diamond to work on possible details with him. Total replacement cost, depending on if thru BD or EMS (or some combination) is in the $600-$700 range.
I've also got another $80 minimum from a couple non-board (but wanting to help out) friends. These funds will be added to the account by middle/end of next week.

I'll donate a little ching his way via paypal to that address.
I posted this on Backcountry Agenda too, which will drum up a little more funds.

Not to worry JT, don't think it'll be an issue, what with that nice de-lam and all on yours;)

A quick update - I've had a few PM's from people extending their intentions, so we're moving along!
I also got an email from Luke. Presently he does not have a paypal account but may set one up.
He also wrote this:
I've been following along on Time for Tuckerman, and I'm really amazed and honored by how much people want to help. Please pass along my gratitude for what everyone is doing for me. Thank you.

Spoke with Luke today. The most discernable ID for his boards are the fact that the diamir fritschi freerides are substantially more worn than the skiis, having come off an earlier pair of boards. A long shot I know, but if they end up in a consignment shop or on craig's list, ebay etc. and they get spotted at least this is more of a clue.

Thank you to those who have sent money or expressed intentions.
As of today there is $75 in the account and I'm aware of some "pending transactions" as people get accounts set up.
As a reminder;) - djming@aol.com

Not at all from me. NtrenT has put a notice on Backcountry Agenda (and I've added some info there as well including the link to this thread).

I've had a couple people ask me about detailed instructions to send money (thank you!!). Sorry, I didn't think to add these prior:
If you have a paypal account established, simply go to the "Send Money" tab and type my email (djming@aol.com) in the "To" box. Follow the rest of the instructions and hit "Send Money". Piece 'O Cake!
If no paypal account, then send me a regular email (same as above) and indicate the amount you'd like to donate. I can then have a "bill" generated that will be emailed to you from paypal, linking directly to my account. You can then follow the instructions thru paypal's secure service and send me the money!
As a total fall back, can always do the old-fashioned check method. I'd really rather stay away from this since at least with paypal, if there's any kind of problem (there won't be), there are recourses thru paypal. If this is the only option for someone, email me or call me (508-769-8140).
No minimum amount thru paypal - every bit counts!!!
One more thing that I just found out - if sending money via a credit card or debit card, PayPal deducts a fee. It seems to work out to about 3%. It appears the way around this is if you have a paypal account, to FIRST transfer monies from a bank account to your account and then send the money to my account. This delays the process 3-5 days, but avoids a fee.
I'm not overly concerned, but wanted to add this as an FYI so there are no surprises.

I apologize to those who contacted me this morning - been in an all day meeting and this is my first opportunity to get on-line.
RR - got your email. Thanks!
davidhowland14 - thanks for the Alpine Zone link. I received a donation from someone who saw it there!
To anyone who sent money today, I have just sent confirming emails (responding to the paypal email that came to me).
If anyone who has sent money has NOT received either an email or PM from me at this point, let me know ASAP.
Most importantly - we are at $267.47 (d**n fees) as of today. There is another $60 "pending" in the account that will clear by Friday. I've also "billed out" an additional $65. Plus, I've heard from a couple others of their intentions via paypal that will only add more. Looking good!

First week and we've raised $380. There is an additional $30 that I know is coming, just waiting for it to arrive/clear, so that brings it to $410.
And I have heard from couple others that they do intend to donate something, so hopefully that will bring it up further.
Thank you to everyone!
Restating the target numbers - $595 is the figure quoted to me by Tyler from Black Diamond for replacement cost. Another $100 or so and icelantic has said he's got 'em in stock at EMS and will mount them. That's the goal!

Another update, this time direct from Luke.
He's still following along with this thread when he can and once again expresses his thanks to all!
I had asked him his preference as to the handling of the funds/equipment. Initially, he was more inclined to deal thru BD. He means absolutely no offense to anyone by this, but has a "favorite guy" in the valley for mounting/working on the equipment. I think we can all appreciate this.
However, when he saw icelantic's offer of transportation, he's reconsidering.
So, icelantic, check your PM's.

More $$ received today. We've officially hit the $500 mark.
There's another $30 that I'm quite certain of.

We are now at $586. Pretty sure about another $30-$40 still on it's way. Maybe some more???
Hmm, looks like I'll be getting those new skins and beacon sooner than expected:)
But seriously, we talked to Luke about it yesterday and discussed various options. Great effort everyone!

I have received money from everybody who has expressed intentions. The amount raised is $625.
Last Sunday icelanticskier, Luke and I discussed options. I'm leaving it up to Luke and icelanticskier for the decisions on gear. I'm just the money guy...
Will be sure to add some pics once final gear decisions are made.

Bump -
Quick update.
Have been in touch with Luke and he's debating a couple different options. No decision made yet on equipment. Donation level still same as last update ($625). Maybe a bit more over the summer?? Would love to get him to the 7 bill mark.

Possible additional contribution coming that should bring us to $650'sh.
I also had a request to provide a bit more detail as to the equipment status. I don't want to provide too much without first checking with Luke, but the bottom line is we have enough to cover his cost for new BD equipment, direct thru Black Diamond. However, this still leaves him paying for shipping and mounting (although we should be close to this).
Getting to $700 will definitely cover all costs and also give Luke some additional options come fall. Seeing as though the season's over (well, at least for most of us ;)), he's fine with waiting a bit longer.

It's not often that there is a chance to repair a damage done, and it takes somebody to step up and make it happen. Kudos. See you out there, maybe sooner, maybe later.;)

If he's interested in heavy duty bindings, I can set him up with Dukes through the rep.
Just kicked in a few more Lincolns. (technically a Hamilton and a half) That should be good for one toe mount.
If he'd rather spend it on Bacon I'd totally understand.

I just received an email from Luke and I have transferred $670.00 to his paypal account. Looks like he's decided on a pair of Icelantic Shamans in 184
(thanks to icelanticskier). He's also working with Black Diamond as to bindings and skins.
So, a big thanks again to all who donated.
Thanks to icelanticskier for setting up the deals (yo Rog, got any pics of the Shamans you can put up?)
And of course thanks to Luke for doing what he does up there and providing valuable assistance (plus some nice cold PBRs back on that wonderful 6/11 day!!!)

Great piece of vision to circumstance, and follow through. May Ullr grant many turns to Luke. Given what he does; he's due. Congrats to Icelantic in this one; he certainly has helped others as well.
