View Full Version : Alert - Skis Stolen from Hermit Lake

I had meant to post this earlier but was reminded during a discussion up on the snowfields today.
Saw this after skiing Friday, and this is from a notice posted in the gear change room of Pinkham:
On Thursday, 5/22 skis were stolen from Hermit Lake. These skis belong to Luke, hut caretaker. They are Black Diamond Kilowatts. 185cm mounted with Freerides.
Thought this should be posted here (and probably other sites as well) for people to be on the lookout.
Can't even comprehend this...

I'll put this on Backcountry Agenda.

can someone provide a picture (composite or not) of what we should be looking for to id the skis so that visitors to the websites that take this up can help out by alerting their readers with a graphic? No one needs to be a vigilante, but a report based on a solid observation could be useful. There are a lot of us out there, as I was reminded today in the easties, and one of us could possibly help. I've lost my own stuff on the rock pile over the past few years, and given the respect that was pervasive prior to now to all things back country that seems to have been lost lately, it sure would be great if Luke got his skis back. To the thief: what comes around goes around, and the karmic wheel does spin.

I posted this at TGR also.

that is the worst thing I have ever heard. In equal parts, I hope the thief gets what he deserves and that Luke gets his ski's back. Actually, I hope the crashes into some rocks somewhere on the rockpile and whoever finds him clicks him out and basically leaves him up there. The best thing about being in the woods is feeling like you don't have to worry about bull**** like that, however untrue that sentiment may be. I'd throw in a couple bucks to buy him some used ski's to finish up the season if you guys were into that as a solution. I'm sure 5 dollar contributions from all these messageboards would go a long way.
Hey Mat, I like how you think re the donations...but as Mrs. RR reminded me, we should check in w'Luke if he is cool with getting cash help for replacements.
Has anybody talked to Luke about it already?
Hey Roger...can EMS help him out?

yeah, someone should check with him...but I'm not talking about handing him $1,000 canadian or anything, just finding something comparable on ebay and having it shipped to him.
Maybe if we put signs in ski shop's that say something like "looking to return stolen property to Tux caretaker" "a thief, possibly the lowest in the history of stealing, made his way off with the goods that have provided assistance on countless rescues and evaluative descents ensuring the communities safety in one of our regions most heavily used and dangerous gems."
so despicable, do you think the thief make his way off in a stolen ambulance?

Yea, it's really low to steal from the caretaker.
I bet Black Diamond would provide replacement gear at a generous price, like $500 for skis and bindings, or perhaps even less.

Check Ebay, Craig's list, and any other place where someone might try to sell these.

Black Diamond will hook up Luke with some new gear at the right price!
Somebody pass this info along to Luke.

That’s a huge bummer. Have Luke drop me an e-mail. I can hook him up with a pair at cost. I have to check what our inventory is at this point. It might not be till next year. I sold off all my demos from this season already.

They should just sponsor him..

Okay everyone, I just got off the phone with Luke. The skis are still missing. The skis were actually taken from one of the back rooms. Sounds like someone knew to look.
Anyway, Luke would really like to replace this equipment (he does have a backup set for rest of this season, but these were "his favorites"). He is completely cool with getting any possible assistance.
So, what can we get going for ideas to help this guy out? Ideas for the best way to set up a donation pool?

i could do 30% off which would save like 300 bucks and mount em for free. getting em at cost, waiting, paying for shipping wouldn't save much more. i've got the skis and binders in stock now
let me know
rog
i'll even hand deliver em
Because the Caretakers have been there for me in the past, I will step up with my pay for 4 three-hour shifts at EMS. I don't know what the exact amount will be. I can do the transfer Friday evening next week. All I need is a destination for the funds.

Does Luke have a paypal account?
If so just post his paypal email here and we can easily send him funds.

Make sure you're looking for Luke's 185 cm Kilowatts with Damir Fritschi Freeride Bindings .... (not my 165 cm ones!)
