View Full Version : Degrees of Tuckerman / Tuckerman Matrix
Trying to think of a kewl way to represent T4T degrees of seperation.
I've met SkiLas, KmRn, KFar, SkiRide, Plummet, Django, Surfy.
I've been in the ravine with DMC, Spent the weekend in a condo about 500ft from SkicDave, and I'm almost positive I've been to phish shows with Elwood and DrPhil without knowing it at the time.
Maybe a matrix of the top 20 posters last couple months, whose met who, and then numbers to indivate the degrees for those you haven't met.
Sounds like a sql query to me.

Thinking outside the digital world for a bit, what about a Tinkertoy-based model?
Each member can be a "hub" that can accept an unlimited number of "connections" to other hubs. Using 3(+) dimensions, it should be possible to depict the linkages between hubs. Viewing of the relations can be achieved by either taking a 3D mouse-rotatable mesh or by "pressing" the whole thing flat into a 2D image (e.g. jpeg) from a given perspective.
Multiplicity of a hub's connections could be demonstrated by color or size, as could the strength/redundancy of a connection between two hubs (e.g. if A has met B many times).

Tuckermans meets 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon meets Friendster.
It would be cool if someone was gifted enough in flash to build a dynamic tinker-toy model like that from database queries.

M@, you foegot Freebird. Does it count that I drove by DMCs place and waved?, (not knowing exactly which place was his)

Whoops... I think that I should have read this conversation before to say in the other one that I wasn't able to translate your post M@

I bet there will be lots more connections after the April and May T4T trips. We'd need a way to grow the thing.
I've met SkiLas, KMRN, and RR, and had near misses with Ski&Ride, Plumment, Skimum and Skidude. I was in the Ravine with hundreds of folks over the three trips I've made, but haven't a clue who. Why not start with direct (meeting) connections only?

Speaking of which, I got the remastered '78 NYE Winterland 4-disc set for Christmas. Way better than the taper SHNs I'd been listening to...

I think PBS in CT aired that show a few weeks back during a pledge drive......
(Was this the final show at Winterland?)
7 degrees - I've only met Elwood and Dr. Phiddlephos briefly on the trail last May....
Almost met Bannick this past week.
Elwood - Once we get some decent snow, I will be looking to hook up with you guys at Smuggs!!!!
Filmore west:
Kansas, BOC, and Starship...contact, oh the contact...'74 or thereabouts.
OK....
The next one of you MoFo's that come to NYC and doesnt let me know - gets it !!! :)

I have been in the same state as some of you....and I am pretty sure that I may have seen the octopus getting on the double at Sugarbush on Christmas day.
I went to Smuggs and yelled "ELWOOD" at the top of my lungs on the weekend but sadly no one answered.

A friend of mine just got back from seeing "The Dead" on NYE.... Said Joan Osborne and Rob Baracco are not in the band anymore. Warren Hains now plays with them... cool..

So a serious look for 7 degrees then might include shows at Oxford Plains Speedway on 7/3/86 or so, or any Boston, Portland or Worcester shows starting in around '73...

I can be related to Luddite thusly: my cousins went to the '86 Oxford Plains show. That's only 2 degrees of separation; you are perhaps my closest "relative".
Tried to whip up a little query to show degrees of seperation - and it's like I'm back in school. Pretty good programming problem.
I got a couple SQL queries to show degree1, and all degree2's - but I started thinking about degree3 and it got MESSY MESSY MESSY.
I'm thinking an application to generate the lowest degree for each member might work better.
Anyone else playing with this yet?
M@
I made most of the Foxboro shows in the 80's... Maybe I didn't get in to all of them but was there none-the-less.
M@ what kind of SQL do you have?
Is it ANSI???
1A4 = 110100100
DMC - prototyping in ACCESS. It's quick - and the SQL is like %90 ansi. I'm using the SqlServer transact-SQL help files (wasn't sure of the union statement)
Anyhow - I think I may have a way to make the queries work simpler - the problem is generating the shortest "Thru" connections. I might just abandon the connections. So the output won't say "2nd Deg Connection, DMC->M@ thru SkiMum"
M@
Here's what I have so far:
Attempt 1 - Using Queries (http://m.sheppard.net/tuckerman/degrees)
There are some problems - and it only goes to 3 degrees... I'd like to have a compelte table relating everyone to everyone else that has a connection.
And after looking at it - I think I've come up with a much easier way to do it!

M@, that looks cool, but there are some grievous errors already. Or I don't understand what you are trying to do. I assumed that what you are trying to do is show that I am 2 degrees away from surfy since you have met surfy and I have met you. Good luck on your refinements. And I have also met Kfar and Ski&Ride, and freebird if you are going to include everyone

Speaking of the Winterland show...I just got the DVD, it is so cool. Interview with Bobby and Mickey at 2am is funny..and Ken Kesey made an appearence.
