I've come to understand that Gulf of slides fans don't want to give away too much info about it (they want to keep it to themselves) but I realy need it!!

Since none of my groomed trails, shoping with my girlfriend, doing anything but earning my turns loving friends would go to Tux with me, my girlfriend agreed to come with me. (she has it all!!). I've skiied right gully and Hillmans. How would you compare those to GOS?

The hike up? Longer? Steeper? Do we need crampons?

The gullies? Steeper? Skiable in the afternoon (as opposed to frozen after 3 PM)

Please send some info!!

Thanks so much!

Le Jean

NO NO NO - Please DO NOT hike up! GOS is a SKI trail - bootpacking the trail ruins it for those skinning up and skiing down - same as it does on the Sherbie, except worse cause the trail is narrower. If you ain't got skins or at least slowshoes, please don't go up the GOS or Sherbie trails.

Seriously.....listen to Pulver. You will get lynched if you bootpack.

If you can ski tux, you can ski GOS.

I'm thinking of hitting GOS up tomorrow as well. I'm bringing a newbie to earning turns and think he'll appreciate the seclusion. Anyone care to divulge on the slop level created in oven the past few days?

The GoS trail is narrow than the Sure-burn, so booting it tends to trash the narrow skiable width.

There are a couple of more South facing gullies that soften up early. On the whole, the GoS cirque is not as deep and convex as Tuckerman, so it stays in the sun more. Get an early start and you'll have plenty of soft snow. Riverc0il and I were in Tuckerman yesterday and (from Pinkham) GoS looked stellar.

Rent snowshoes.....

And yes, it REALLY is a big issue.

Is there a low approach to GOS from Hojo's???

What's is the hike like from the top of Hillman's?

I'll be spending the better part of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday on Mt. Washington. I'm heading up solo...would love to share the adventures with T4T'ers...

Changed my mind,

called the boss,

found snowshoes,

will drive 5h to get there early,

will park toward the southern end of the parking lot very early tomorow morn,

You can identify Le Jean Mobile easily. It's a gorgeous 96 Camry with a Quebec lissence plate, "TUX" and "OBX" stikers on the back. I'll be out making myself a expresso coffee quite early I imagine. Will be ready to go around 8-9.

Have to go to work, can't read replys later so maybe I'll see you there Surf88 or the other guy with the newbi

It's my yearly trip up there can't wait!!:cooldog:

Straightest approach would be hike Hillman's and traverse ridge to the right off Boot Spur. From the webcam pic, it looks like a fair amount of coverage, might have to rock hop for a bit (sticking to established trail and OFF any vegetation, of course).

GOS is more moderate angle than most stuff in bowl (I'm guessing 'cuz when I hit it, it was socked in.....)

MY thought would be to take the reverse approach as the Sherburne is quite a bit wider than the GOS trail for a ski out. Also, with the traffic that is looking like it will be up there this weekend, skiing down the GOS trail is likely to involve meet ups with folks coming up....could be sketchy for all.

Hillman's, Dodge's ,etc...may be better afternoon choices due to aspect. my .02 but use your own judgement supported by what things look like when you are actually there. :ng2006::D

hillmans, dodges actually are better morning aspects as they get morning sun and lose sun earlier than most. with this heat though, the sun doesn't matter much. gonna be really deep tomorrow. i'll probably head up hillmans way starting by 730 or 8 cuzi gotta work in the afternoon in portsmouth. don't go to gos looking for solitude unless it's in feb.

Posted some conditions from Thurs/Fri in the thread above (it seems the gods that protect climbers also protect them when they foolishly do some skiing). Have not lurked enough here to know if this info is redundant. Carry on. Dale
