as a tucks newbie, this may be a slightly ignorant question but here it goes: riding tucks in the early season is possible, correct?

Sure, mostly short and rock strewn. Also, mid to late Spring is when the daylight hours really allow a full day. In the Late Fall and Early Winter the days are getting short and the temps and winds are really extreme.

Still and all, there some riding on the Rockpile right about now, free but mostly short rides with walking sections on the way down. Left Gully fills in decently, so a few hundred feet of sliding can be found.

Don't even think it's okay for new gear...rock tools are best until Late December and Early January.

Be careful. What do you mean by "early season"? Right now you'd be insane. During most of the winter, there is considerable avalanche danger throughout the range. I'd wager that most people who come to the ravine for the first time come in May or late April. Before that, you need a more robust set of skills, and a lot more luck.

el-bagr is so right. Avvy danger is a serious matter. Check it out by waiting till the posting has been made in the morning.

If it is Moderate or above newbies are wise if they go earn their tuns on Wildcat or Just ride the Sherborne Trail from Hermit Lake. If you decide to walk up the Wildcat Ridge Trail, bring crampons for the ledge crossings. It gets realy icy in a couple bad spots. If you are used to riding with a mountain axe, that too would be handy on the WRT.

Wait for Tuck's to fill in.My first turns there are usually done in January.If you do go early in the season pay very close attention to the avalanche reports.Tuck's is no place to be a hero.
