Was reading an article about Whiteface in the November issue of Ski Canada this morning. Included in the article was mention of the developing of terrain pods on the far side of The Slides (to right of the summit chair). My question is, what the heck are 'terrain pods'?

I'm looking at their brochure right now. No mention of a terrain pod. To the right of the Slides is 35 acres of ungroomed wilderness skiing.

Yes Surfy, that backcountry area is where they want these 'terrain pods'. I'm thinking that a terrain pod is the naming convention for a separate area of ski terrain, ie not immediately connected to the main area. I'm sure someone in the know will come up with a definitive answer to this one.

I was looking for the definition of terrain pod when I stumbled on this in a ski dictionary:

Traverse:
To ski across a slope at an angle; one of two quick and simple methods of reducing speed.
Tree:
The other method.

Made me laugh.

Kinda OT, but how are those slides up near the top of Whiteface??? I went up the Gondola last summer, and they looked pretty impressive to ski, with good snow. Is it possible to hike up to the top of the mountain from the highest lift? Then what are the chutes like???

the slides are nice-I skied there easter sunday, 2002 on hero snow-I don't think they opened at all last season because of a layer of ice under the snow which made for unstable conditions-I only skied slides 1 and 2. You climb a little way from the summit chair. When I was there you couldn't have hiked to the summit and skied from there-there was bands of exposed rock between the summit and the top of the slides
