If earlier is better this year, is early May still an attractive time to make a first effort?

Early May might be ok... but expect the skiing to be a bit more limited.. still worth while though. After that you'll have to rest your faith with a good helmet...

The first snow to go is up on the lip, and the bottom of the bowl. A fall at this time could well mean sliding down the steep slope into the expose boulders in the bottom of the bowl. See http://timefortuckerman.com/tuck980517.html for a photo and report for similar conditions of May 17, 1998. I'd say this spring will closely follow that of 1998 based on current snow levels.
