The skier's dictionary posted by M@ reminded me of these math problems I wrote for my son when he was in second grade.

To complete these exercises, you will need a pen or pencil, a piece of paper, and an adult to help you:

MATH PROBLEMS FOR CANNON SKIERS:

1. We skied 15 runs. If we took two Tram runs, and one Peabody Chair run, how many Zoomer Chair runs did we take?

2. A really bad skier falls after every three moguls. If he skied down fifteen moguls, how many times would he fall?

3. You forgot your goggles at the Tram, you lost your neck warmer in the parking lot, and you left your gloves somewhere near the ski school desk. How many things did you lose?

4. The Tram is 2000 vertical feet, and the Zoomer Chair is 600 vertical feet. If we ski 2 Tram runs and 5 Zoomer Chair runs before hot chocolate break, how many vertical feet did we ski?

5. If you buy a cheeseburger for $4.95 and a small fries for $1.05, and a small drink for $1.25, how much did lunch cost?

6. The Tram has to shut down when the wind is 50 miles per hour (MPH). If the wind is blowing 20 MPH at 8:00 AM, and it is increasing every hour by 10 MPH, what time does the Tram shut down?

7. Tram One leaves the valley platform at 8:30 AM. If it takes 30 minutes to drive to the mountain, and 15 minutes to put your boots on, what time do you need to leave home to get on Tram One?

8. The Tram holds 70 skiers with the benches folded up and everyone standing. There are 2 benches, and 4 skiers can sit on each bench. Both benches folded down with 8 skiers sitting on them take up twice as much room as skiers standing. How many skiers fit on the Tram with the benches down?

ANSWERS:

1. 12 Zoomer runs
2. 5 falls
3. 4 things (counting 2 gloves!)
4. 7000 vertical feet
5. Lunch cost $7.25
6. 11:00 AM
7. 7:45 AM
8. 62 skiers (8 sitting, and 54 standing)

Home schooling is the best! I loved it when the little nipper had to do a geography lesson, like: find the true summit of Cannon, looking at your USGS map, using your compass, what ridgeline is that? If all the raindops falling on this side of the ridge vist Lincoln on their way to the sea, where will the raindrops falling on the other side of the ridge be going on their way to the sea?

No, we can't go see, we are parked at the Tram Lot, we will just have to ski down

Was this one written after a frustrating morning at the mountain?

Of course your son was at ski school when he lost his gloves so I am guessing it must have been a powder day. :D
