I didn't make it up to killington, but i did get my first tracks of the season at mount snow and haystack!!! when i first got to mount snow at about 11 am, as pictured below there was plenty of man-made snow to ski on, but the ski patrol wouldn't even let people hike on the trail :(

http://www.msnusers.com/_Secure/0TAAAAOIVwjNOqmPmtJGhNmsnQFp*kb!9FMWQ4UQq4ylU2HPfe 3tLC3oIZmIn4ZSMpKn0*gn4yNAuxZvQNLE4!VTWSn7a8C9nVyb 3Y!jAxlErb*gz*vwtAQ/DSCN0712.JPG?dc=4675446782770249268

Dissapointed, i made my way over to haystack, and did a nice hike up the maintenence road, rewarded by a nice lake view up near the summit.
It then started to snow, fairly heavily and since the ground was just about frozen, it began accumulating quickly:

so, i hurried back to mount snow, realizing that all ski patrolers were probably gone by then, and finally i got to take a few runs on the bunny hill of the main mountain.

and finally on the way back home, i couldn't resist doing one more run on a snow-covered dirt road right near haystack. turning on about a half inch of snow on top of :rocks: and dirt prooved to be easier than i expected.

by the end i probably only got about 300 vertical feet, but it was better than nothing!

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one skiing with less than 1 inch of snow with some rocks under it ;)

Congrats for your first tracks !!

Too bad that they don't accept to see some boarders/skiers on the slopes at Mt. Snow... Here, few mountains are more likely to take their camera and use us for marketing !!

Do you know the opening date for Mt Snow?

BTW, Franko, that's what "rock skis" are for, isn't it?

M@ what type of boards do you have? Are the Atomic or Salomon bye any chance?

Mount Snow is planning to open on friday the 21st, and with the probable thursday snowstorm and stretch of forecasted below average temperatures, they should definitely be able to.

M@, is that picture at killington?

Excellent. I'll put Mt Snow on my to-do list for Thanksgiving weekend. Do you think there will be anywhere better for Thanksgiving weekend? What's Okemo like, and when does it open? Are there other places (south of K-Mart)?

Skimum,
Do you think Femme Cannon day is still in the mix for the 28th? Their website still says they intend to open that day. I HAVE to ski SOMEWHERE that day, I'm going nuts!

M@: Very nice fist turns pic. Lucky!

I'm going to be at Cannon the Saturday before (11/22). I will assess the conditions, talk to the folks there about what they expect for 11/28 and will report back here Monday 11/24. If it doesn't look good, I'd be fine with K-Mart or elsewhere...

Last year we planned a Dec 10th trip to cannon - and ended up assesing trail counts and opting for Okemo. It was the right thing to do, Cannon had one real trail - and we would have been bored fast. Okemo had like 5 or 6 I think.

The hard part was getting the real trail count - we ended up printing out all the trail maps of the open areas, and highlighting the trails listed as open on the snow reports. That was the only way to get a real picture.

We will keep you posted via e-mail on the details. Okay! I'm willing to meet up at a different mountain with better conditions, if that's what you all decide. I'm flexible!

:snowflakes: :chicken: Lots of places plan to be open by then. Even a bunch of smaller places, so your options should be varied. With the snow that should fall this week and the temps staying cool I think you will be able to ski & ride wherever you want. I will be trying to get some turns in on the gulf of mexico...

It's really nice that Bretton Woods has a good attitude towards people hiking up & skiing on the man-made stuff; the snowmaking crew stops to chat on the hike up, the guys at the bottom ask you to report back with conditions, and the ski patrollers occassionally are out there hiking themselves!

I don't know how many other mountains let you hike up to get turns... I bet Cannon would, and Wilcat probably, but I can't think of too many others...

Interestingly, it is verbotten to hike up the Cannon ski trails during the non-winter. Something about it being a park or protected area or something, but once the snow falls they seem to be OK with it. I asked about it last month when there was snow all over and they said it was OK to go ahead and hike 'em.

If I was a ski area, I would encourage this. Mad River has snow shoe treks all over their mountain.

"Walk all over me baby!"
