I've been scouting some rock to climb near the house so that I don't have to drive 1.5 hours to Pawtuckaway, or 2 hours to Rumney... I found two faces, one in Greenfield on North Pac, and one in New Boston overlooking the radomes. Anybody have any beta on these? I hiked up to the one on North Pac last night, rapped off, got a good look at the rock while hanging in the harness. Maybe 40 feet high, and maybe a dozen climbs on the face ranging from 75 degree slab to overhanging. EZ up to what looks around a 10c/10d, maybe 11a? Not sure, I have to get on it to know- still not experienced enough to tell just by looking at it. The other one in New Boston looks about 100 feet high, and at least 100 yards long, although it's hard to tell from the air while beating a student pilot over the head with a chart. (just kidding) :D Anybody interested in exploring these new places? The one on North Pac is maybe (abosolute most) 4 miles from my house, and the one in New Boston is about halfway between my house and the Manch-ranch, maybe 20-25 minutes from vegas. Sure beats Rock Rimmon- who wants to scope it out with me?
Sounds like fun...sadly, I am chained to a ladder and house painting supplies for at least two more weeks...pennance for my April and July trips, no doubt.

I'm guessing the cliff you saw in New Boston is Joe English Hill, which is on a USAF reservation (radar tracking instalation). This place has actually got routes on it and a long history of climbing. However access has allways been an "issue", and I believe things have gotten worse since 9/11.

Yeah, we used to get kicked out of Joe English all the time when I was a kid, but now they are alot more agro about security, and you will actually get arrested. I'm verry familiar with the crag on the south side of N. Pack, that one can be alot of fun.
Although not natural, a really good place to climb is: Go south on Rt. 31 towards Greenville, and about a mile before the green Bridge you will drive through an old railroad trestle that the tracks have been removed from. Park your car somewhere discreet! If you hike down into the river gorge You will see the bolted routes on both of the Stone trestles. One of the Trestles is nearly 100'. Last time I was there the bolts did not go all the way to the top of either structure, but there are plenty of places for cams and nuts. I lived in Wilton for alot of my life, and know of some other places.

Sure you're not top roping and 'playing' mountaineer under the guise of house painting? :p ;)
Sure you're not top roping and 'playing' mountaineer under the guise of house painting? :p ;)God I wish! Deep, lustrous green trim, dark brown semi-transparent stain.
Both are oil based, the paint is Pittsburgh and the stain is Cabot. Decent brushes and short knap on the mid size rollers...30 foot ladder and u-betcherass I rigged safeties
