Snowshoes and camping

Hey yall, we are heading up to Tuckerman's for the first time on March 21. I have two questions. First, do the tent sites and lean-to's usually fill up on Friday night that early in the season? Due to school and the drive, we wont be able to get to Pinkmans till about 6 pm. We are prepared to hike in the dark, but dont want to show up at Pinkmans to find out there are no campsites left. Second, will snowshoes be necessary, or helpful during march? Thanks for any help, and we can't wait to get up there!
