Somebody I know told me that there used to be helicoters(private companies) that would drop off skiers at the top of Tuck's. They said that the envirmentalist stopped this because of air pollution. Is this true? Thanks :skierscared:

There are lots of reasons not to have :heliski: including:
- protect the area/environment
- visual pollution
- sound pollution
- the danger/safety issues
- the whole concept of hiking up so you know what your going to be skiing
More about this here (http://timefortuckerman.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000539#000010) and here (http://timefortuckerman.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000381#000000) .

YES THIS IS TRUE. NO MECHANIZED VEHICLES IN THE AREA LAND OR AIR. ONLY THE COG AND THE FOREST SERVICE SNOWCATS. SO WE WILL BE HAULING OUR ASSES UP THE MOUNTAIN FOR A LONG, LONG TIME TO COME! THEY HAVE PROPOSED EVERYTHING FROM GUIDE ROPE, ROPE TOWS AND CHAIRLIFTS.... NO CASH, NO DICE! NOT TO MENTION THE NH STATE LAWS PERTAINING TO STATE FOREST PRESERVATION. TUCKS IS WHAT IT IS BECAUSE THOSE PROPOSALS GOT SHOT DOWN.. AGAIN AND AGAIN IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. THERE WAS A POST FROM THE "COG" WHICH I POSTED A WHILE BACK TAKE A LOOK AT THAT POST, IT GOT A LOT OF GREAT FEEDBACK FROM KNOWLEDGABLE TFT COMRADS :unhappyhiker: :unhappyhiker: :unhappyhiker: :unhappyhiker: :unhappyhiker: :autoroad: UP UP UP WE GO! A HELI WOULD GREATLY REDUCE THE ACHE IN MY SHOULDERS AND LOWER BODY BUT IT WOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO GET A KEG UP! :D

If they allowed Helicopters or other vehicles to take people up, it just wouldn't be the same. Every wannabe nouveau riche yuppie would be taking the easy route just to say I skied Tucks.
It would be like saying I surfed Pipeline, but I was on my belly on a boogie board. It only counts if your are standing up.
Tucks, it only counts if you make the hike. :hikingboots:

Yes it true. Al Risch used to offer guided Heli-tours of the upper snowfields and Tucks. Al is one of the founders of Friends of Tuckerman Ravine.

Maybe we could get some snowmobiles in the upper snowfields, and do some tow-in skiing/ boarding off the lip. Kind of like tow-in surfing at Jaws...

Awww c'mon BC and Pepperdawg. Most people who Heli are people who have done their share of hiking and have reached a point in their lives where they can afford the ride. And I'll bet, have logged more vert than the average Tucks visitor.
This is a debate that rages out West where commercial Heli concessions and backcountry skiers vie for the "goods" in the same areas. You tend to see the brash young turks on the "there is no virtue in not hiking" side.
But what they don't realize is the heli customers are folks that have been skiing for years, hiking for years and are enjoying the fruits of their labors both on and off the snow. Earn your turns can be many things.
Para skiers posted an awesome TR in Couloir Magazine last Fall. They went to Baffin Island, home to some of the biggest cliffs on the planet and ripped the gullies there. They commuted from camp to camp skijoreing behind paras. They had really small one's for windy days and a couple of other sizes too. Stellar photos and 4000' descents! Yahoo!!!!! Couloir Mag (http://www.couloirmag.com/Articles/Destinations/destinations_index.htm)
Okay now the bad news, the prevailing NW winds would make the approach difficult on Mt Washington. Jefferson Notch road would be okay for snow machines or skinning, but too many trees for paras. Once above tree line it would be okay, but there'd be no way to scout the first drop into the Ravine coming from that side of the mountain.

about Pipeline, i was just there about a month ago and that place is crazy. Even though is wan't the winter season, the waves were huge. I have a deep respect for people who can go out and ride waves that big.

THE UP SKIING IS A CRAZY IDEA UNLESS YOU ARE ABOVE THE TREE LINE! I WAS AT TREMBLANT THIS WINTER AND SAW SOME PEOPLE PARA SKIING ON THE LAKE. THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE HAVING A GREAT TIME UNTILL A GUST PICKED UP AND DEPOSITED THE RIDER IN SOME TALL TREES VERY FAR FROM WHERE HE WAS RIDING! :upski: :tucks: THAT SPORT IS CRAZY!!! I WENT KITE SURFING ONE TIME AND WAS DRAGGED ALONG THE BEACH FOR ABOUT 100-200 YARDS! I WILL NEVER STRAP INTO A KITE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT AGAIN. THE WIND IS TOO UNPREDICTABLE! I DON'T EVEN FLY ON DAYS THAT ARE A LITTEL GUSTY.... THIS I'VE LEARNED FROM EXP!

Yeah, I don't know about putting my faith in the wind to take me where I need to go when I don't have a hull and a rudder. When there are trees, rocks and cliffs, that is taking it a little to far for this elwood! :upski:
