Im planing a trip to ski tucks in april 04, cant wait !
In the mean time im so excited about going, Im thinking about hiking up to tuckerman's this month (August) just to see it.
I have never been to tucks before so bear with me.
HoJo's seems to be the place that everyone rests up and then makes the final hike into the bowl and up tuckermans.
Is HoJo's a snack bar? are they opened in august if I hike up there?
just curious, I want to get aquanited with the area so when I go to ski it everything will be perfect.
Im from CT so its around a 400 mile drive each way so I dont want it to suck.

Snack bar....hummm...sort of. Long ago the croo (that's the underpaid, overworked, summertime, two legged pack-mules that work for the AMC) started refering to the caretaker's hut at Hermit Lake as Howard Johnson's...don't ask me, I don't know why...its never had an orange tiled roof.
Anyway, it was shortened to HoJo's and has been same ever since. But you can get some candy bars and a few other items, when the caretaker is around.
Yes, it's open year-round, but the public space is tiny, weather instruments and bulletins and the open or closed "store" window and not much else.
On nice sunny days the deck is crowded, on hot days the covered porch is crowded....it's just a way station...just like Howard Johnson's used to be....

It could be a snack bar - if you bring your own snacks.

Brought NO food up cause they thought they'd be eating a big egg breakfast at Hojos...

If you finally get to TR, take a look at the white blob in the lower portion of the ravine to be sure it isn't :skistooge: trying to tan. Find out what it is.

You can be sure, SkiMum. Me too I'm curious to see what is so white in some places near the ravine. I guess it's some white rocks. I wonder so much about the pic of mid-july when it was looking like there was some snow at the top of the ravine. Was it snow ???? or just sun hitting the rocks ??? Anyway, I'll never know the truth.

The reason it is called HoJos is, the previous building to occupy the site (previous as it burned down) had a roof similar to the ones of the Howard Johnsons restaurant chain.
Not quite a snack bar. No hot food or sleeping arrangements (lean-to's for that).
Check the rest of this site, not just the discussion board for all the info you need in an excellent format. It will get you physched to go.
personally: Tux is winter only for me. It's so awsome with snow, I don't WANT to see it without.
