View Full Version : Tuckerman Purity Test ALPHA TEST

Please help me beta test the new Tuckerman Ravine Purity Test.

Got the idea from FrankOnTour's die hard skier test, and the old school internet purity tests.

I guess I need to have a "1-10 = this, 11-20 = this" but first I wanna get the questions down.

So I look to you, the Tuckerman Online Community, for feedback on the questions I have compiled to date.

NOTE: Do not take your score to heart yet, I will add questions and remove them, this is ALPHA TESTING.

And without futher adeiux:

The Tuckerman Ravine Purity Test (alpha) (http://www.weirdtable.org/~m/tuckerman/purity/index.php)

Nice I like it. You have spent the night in a hermit lake lean to twice.

Additions.

Listened to Saxman in the Bowl
Witnessed an avalance
Witnessed ice fall
Witnessed Rock Fall
Been taken out while climbing up
How about skied each of the different routes.
Number of hours drive it is to get there?

That's all I can think of....Keep up the good work

20 seems to be the magic #

How about.
1.) Skied the Snowfields
2.) Skied in the Winter (before the vernal equinox)
3.) Great Gulf (Not really Tucks)
4.) Climbed up to Hojos and then bailed due to weather, Avi, etc.
5.) Gone by yourself (If they don't want to go, forget 'em)
6.) Could you get your Tucks gear together in 20 minutes (any time of year)

I might group the "Have you skied" into:

Not really even skiing:
Sherburne

beginner:
In Bowl, Hillmans

Intermediate: "To the Top"
Lip, Right Gully

Advanced:
Left Gully from the top
Chute
Duchess

Master:
Center Headwall/Icefall/Dodges

DMC

Dodges is a whole lot sacarier than the Center Headwall. At least for me...

I lump Dodges with Dutches and Empress in a Supreme Master.

Looks good :ma: ster!

So if someone checks off Skied Naked in the bowl how many 'purity points' do they loose? :nakedguy:

Darn! I only got 11 points.

Questions to Add (Possibly):

Raced in the Son of Inferno (watched, participated, crashed the banquet)

Tried to ski the Headwall on wooden skis like Toni Matt (yes, didn't wipeout, shussed)

Skied Gulf of Slides

Skied Great Gulf

Skied more than 10 runs in a day.

Fell into a crevasse.

Tubed the headwall.

Lost your wife in the bowl.

Met your wife in the bowl.

Got married at Tuckerman Ravine (like John and Illene).

Made out in the bowl.

Carried up a keg without a :seqway: .

Have dried up grass and mud still on your skis left over from last run down the Sherburne Ski Trail.

Have a pair of rock skis, just for late spring skiing at Tucks.

Carried you skis up in the summer when there was no snow (once, more than once)

Own a copy of 'Over the Headwall'.

Own any one of the following movies (Dr Quackenbush skis the Headwall, Schultz on Mount Washington, The Ravine, Thrills and Spills in the North Country).

Have any poster of Tuckerman Ravine (1,2 or more).

Have a 2 way radio (set to 9-14, set to 9-14 and currently on).

You are where? (at home, work, currently at Tuckerman Ravine).

Your last name is Tuckerman.

You have a Toni Matt tattoo (on your arm, lower back, elsewhere).

You dream of Tuckerman (at night, all day, when eating Cheerios out of a bowl).

Used duct tape (a bit, lots, as much as M@)

You set your HomePage to timefortuckerman.com :p

M@, also add to the 'Have you skied - Naked in the bowl' option...

Naked in the bowl but not fined
Naked in the bowl and fined (extra points)
Naked in the bowl and recognized (more extra points)
Naked in the bowl but wipedout (loose all points)

I definately agree that Dodges is a notch above Center headwall due to the rocks. I was trying to avoid the "double" or "triple" diamond syndrome.

LOLOLOL Dave,

I really liked your new questions
Hmm, there is really a lot of possible questions to ask as I can see.

Castlerock, a question for you : you put the Center Headwall in the "master" ones and the Lip in the intermediates. I know the place is totally different in winter than summer, but in summer, I would switch both ones.... Is the lip so easy in winter while it's just a huge cliff in summer ? The center headwall also looked not so tough, without snow.

Castlerock:
DMC, Where is Empress? If your standing at Hojos and your looking at the Dutches above the Lower Snow Fields - The Empress is the triangle shaped patch to the right. It normally involves traversing/bushwacking to the lower part of the Dutches to get out...

Castlerock, a question for you : you put the Center Headwall in the "master" ones and the Lip in the intermediates. The Lip is a a piece of cake... You could fall at the top and just slide... As people do evry 10 minutes or so during a busy day :)

The Center Headwall alot of times involves picking your way through a rock band to get through it to a point where you can either ski or huck the cliff.

I personally have never riden the Center Headwall... Next year...

Sheburn: I have this as one point right now, becuase it is an easy ski: but it also deomstraights a determination to have gone early enough in the season and braved potentially much colder temperatures than when it is closed.

Anyhow: I've got v0.5 up now.

I'm versioning this becuase it's a good idea: You can compare your scores to other peoples scores based on the version # and you've got apples to apples. Minor revisions will only involve updating spelling errors or very obvious/low point stuff, so you can compare a ver1.0 score to a v1.5 score with confidence. I plan on v1.0 in the next week or so.

V2.0 I'll save for mid-ski-season maybe. At that point the "Need To Ski Tuckerman" will be strong and we'll all have lots of ideas on new questions or opinions on the point system established in v1.0. And maybe ppl will want a check list of things to do on their respective tuckerman trips to get their scores higher =)

Wow: This really got more complicated fast didn't it?

Anyuhow: Please check v0.5 and keep those new questions and ideas and commentary rolling in!

0-10: You've been, now go back and earn some more points.
11-30: A seasoned veteran. Share your expierence with others.
31-50: You truley know how to enjoy the ravine
51-70: Tuckerman is part of your life, as much as driving a car or a sports team.
71-100: You probably got a spring blue-bird day early on huh? And now you just can't stop.
100-150: You're involved in a serious addiction here. You might want to seek help.
150-250: Did you get FINED for skiing naked?
250-292: You definatly cheated.

Frank, DMC put it well. The lip is the first thing 95% of the people ski. You climb up it (so you can see it), There is no ambiguity in the entrance, and due to the way the snow fills in it is one of the easiest pitches. On the other hand, with the center headwall, it is a convex blind entrance, you don't/can't climb it. You have to pick navigation points to find the entrance (as opposed to getting stuck above the cliffs of the icefall). In addition, I have never skied anything as steep, anywhere, anytime. It is distinctly steeper than the Chute. It is steeper than Dodges. (Dodges has a few more consequences from a fall however). The only thing that rivals it's pitch is the few turns at the top of left gully when the cornice is big.

101 on V0.5

I might add a "skiied top to bottom" category. Above the bowl/snowfields to Pinkham.

Maybe skied other places on the mountain. great Gulf/Gulf of Slides/East Snow fields/Oakes Gulf.

How about skied at Tucks when you had a free lift ticket somehwere else?

I also might debate the weighting of some of the "non-skiing" categories. You can score 80 and not even ski!

Mumster

38, and good work, :ma: :ducttape: . But I think the scale is a little off on some things.

1. Consider giving summer raviners points? It's not a ski purity test, it's a TR purity test. Summer is an important time for the :happyhiker: .

2. Why is "getting on an inner tube" worth 10 points? You would need to :skicool: down Hillman's, the Lip and the upper snow fields to get the same points. Any moron can hop onto an inner tube. And, they don't weigh much to carry up.

3. Concieving a child seems like the ultimate. Maybe it should be worth more than :nakedguy: , since it's permanent. :nakedguy: is cool, but doesn't have the lasting impact.

4. Hmmm. 10 points for sex at TR...the same as sitting in an inner tube?

Frankontour
08-20-2003, 05:16 PM
Castlerock : wow, this is weird how it can look different during summer. The Lip and the Icefall are just a huge cliff and it looks impossible to ski there, when you're in summer. The center headwall look very steep too, but quite less rocky than the Lip. I'm eager to see that by my own eyes, with snow. A sure thing, I don't begin by skiing the "master" ones ;) It will probably be Hillman's for the 1st run, honestly... or right gully... or something not so heavy to begin and get use to skiing the mountain ! I will certainly try the Lip or the Chute on my 1st day, though. It's to see ;)

I like the suggestion for adding skiing other places, but how about dividing it up by:

Skiing other sections of the Mt Washington “massif”:
- Huntington Ravine
- Gulf of Slides
- Ammonoosuc Ravine/Monroe Brook
- Burt Ravine
- Great Gulf

Skiing other nearby high peaks of the Presidentials:
- Jefferson
- Adams

Other suggestions...

Longest roundtrip driving done for a Tucks daytrip:
- up to 4 hours
- up to 6 hours
- up to 8 hours
- over 8 hours

Split up time of year question into separate months, and have a separate q for skiing in those months vs. just hiking.

Weather conditions skied in Tucks:
- light rain
- rain
- heavy rain
- light snow
- snow
- heavy snow

Include subtractions for skiing in Moderate avy forecast w/o avy rescue gear/training, as well as for skiing in anything above Moderate regardless of gear/training.

Gad M@... I'm only scoring 48 points on v0.5 !!!

Mainly since I haven't stayed up at Hermit Lake... then again I never skied :nakedguy: ... or had a chance to make whoopie there like you guys.

Based on the point structure, to get the most points a person who have to:

Haul up a keg a beer in the dead of winter, ski naked, drunk no doubt since you would be alone for the 5pts with all that beer, contribute to the Volunteer Ski Patrol (on top of the naked skiing fine?), give cooked bacon away.. probably to the Volunteer Ski Patrol as a bribe, make whoopie on the way back at Hermit Lake (somebody who hasn't seen you naked in those cold cold temps), and later get married to same.

Based on these facts, highest score goes to a strong, promiscuous drunk who is an exhibitionist, has no friends and doesn't have a job in the winter... BUT alas, is still a lady-killer.

Conclusion: I am happy with my mere 48 points :p

I understand your input. And thanks for the feedback. Pretty much everyone has been against the 50pt Naked skiing question... and most problems with the scoring have been "Nakaed skiing is as important as..." flavoured.

So in the next verison, skiing a-la-mode will be far fewer points. Probably 15.

And, just like the pack weight, feel free to steal the code. I'd like to retain creative control over the content, i.e. the questions.

M@ for the purity test, its pretty good already. Can't think of much to add except something to do with the weather as a real purist isn't deterred by weather forecasts. Off course stupidity could be an issue that conflicts with purity... I think. How about this one though...

Have you ever gone up regardless of the weather?
- a balmy bikini Sunday .1pt
- raining hard - forecasted for all day 2pt
- blizzard/whiteout conditions 4pt
- climbed Hillmans or Headwall in a dense fog 6pt
(stupid idea.. but get points for being so devote)

You might also need to add something for those who have hiked up at night for an early start... like yourself M@. Maybe 5pt for hiking in the dark with the boogie man, 3pt if you bring along a friend :p

Next in order I think would be a 'How much of a Tucks Junky' are you test.

When your purity test is done, let me know and I'll add it in like your pack weight calculator.

Mucho appreciated for your contributions to the community as always.

That's a lot of fun M@ -- thanks.

I scored a mere 60, which gives me a few things to work on for next year. Never overnighted in the ravine (although I have skiied it on consecutive days). I've also never managed to ski the Right Gully, the Lip, or the Center Headwall. I always end up drawn to Left Gully, the Chute, or Hillman's. So much terrain, so little time.... Next year I'd love to try Dodge's, conditions permitting, and the center headwall.

Suggestions for version 1.0:

Award more more Dodge's and the others that it's paired with -- there are numerous clean, fairly wide lines (relatively speaking) through the center headwall, for example, while (IMHO) any line in Dodge's is a real piece of true technical skiing.

I'd say award fewer points for the tubing, but on second thought, that's real crazy sh!t and your likelihood of injury is probably way the heck greater than skiing.

Second the motion to devalue naked skiing.

Maybe add a skied summit (alright, you don't have to bag the rock pile that the sign is in, that never holds snow, but at least from the parking lot) to base for a few points.

Maybe add some of the other lines on the mountain for some points. In addition to those already mentioned by others, how about GOS and especially Huntington Ravine -- fewer points for the fan; serious points for the ice climbing routes (yes, they're skiable; maybe some day by me!)

Mucho fun! Thanks again!

Mumster

Speaking of - points, how about points off for:

Assuming the weather in the ravine will be the same as that at the base of Mt Washington?

Mumster you still at work? Don't people go out to play anymore? Unfortunately, I'm still :atwork: .

It's a good thing I have a few diversions :D and an active fantasy life... :skiplow: , :heliski: , :gondola: , :snowflakes: , :makeoutonatube: , :saxaphone: , :hottub:

BTW, Davester :skicdave: where did the :bum: come in? I totally missed it.

LOL hey.. well I wasn't going to like promote it :)

Helps if you need to tell someone to " :lips: my :bum: "

Also saves typing.... ie

"Elwood I was going to go to :tucks: today, :bum: I had to :atwork: late."

or

" :ma: made such great :pizza: at :shelters: that I think I have :pizza: :bum: ... I probably have to take a :snowcat: back down to :pinkham: "

Hey M@ -- one more idle thought. Dish out extra points for having telemarked any of the lines that you decide to list. Those guys and gals are in a whole 'nother universe of cool, skiing the steep stuff sans locked heel....

v.05 scored an 88... like said in my newbie hello, i am a tuckerman junkie. however, need to work on getting it to triple digits. mmmmmmmmmm pre-cooked bacon! that is a great idea! i always gag at the thought while in the supermarket, but i'm sure it's pretty tasty in the morning.
my .02 for additions would be:
ever been broadsided by a falling climber?
and
ever hiked up whilst hungover, booted and kept going?
