My trip was very similar to Kfarrar's
I got to the p. Notch at 6:30 Am Saturday morning.
The snow was really crusty. So, I hiked the first three switchbacks of the hiking trail. Then I went to skinning mode (split board) on the ski trail.
I skinned past Hojos to the first steeper portion of the upper hiking trail. Then I had to carry by board because the path was not smooth enough to skin. Then I went back to skinning. Went I got to the steeper section at the lower waterfall, things got worst. I put by board on my pack because, again, I could not skin. But the wind was blowing so hard, my board was making a para-sail out of me. I had a really hard time walking. It was pretty obvious that boarding in the ravine was not going to happen. So, I headed down.
As kfarrar said, the Sherburne trail was BAD. Way to firm for a split board. I was taken out three times by what I now call the waterbars from hell. I tried (unsuccessfully) to lean back as I approached them to raise the tip of my board. Each time, my board stopped dead-but my body didn’t. Then I learned to slow down. There were only a few spots were I could actually carve a few turns nicely. I was in my car by 11 and at the bar by 12.
I’ll be back on the 26th or 27th of Dec for redemption.
