During March of 2007, I collected all the Trip Reports and found their locations on Google Earth. All of these waypoints make quite an interesting folder of .kmz files. P8s trip to France throws everything way out of wack.

Thats neat, but not quite the intent of the show but no tell policy. This is exactly why trip reports to the BC tend to be ambiguous about the location. I would hate to see a thumbtack on one of my favorite BC spots.

ah...good call. most of the BC things were ambigous so i put them in the town the was mentioned, but i'll check again. i totally agree with you.
EDIT: i just checked again and the only BC that is marked are trails (thunderbolt, sherburne, slidebrook). I wasn't exact enough for specific stashes to be marked. if you see anything you want removed or think anyone would want removed, just tell me. don't wanna ruin anyone's riding/skiing. :skicool:
I don't think Dave gave anything away - I think it's pretty freaking kewl! I wonder how long it took you?
And now I know where France is. (jk)

about 5 minutes for each TR. not that bad. worth it to see the spread of all the places we get to.

If you are going to talk about trips to a location in a public forum, then be prepared for the public to show up at that location. If you want to keep the public away from where you take your trips, then don't talk about where you are going in public. Basically, I don't think the show but don't tell policy is a good one. If you are going to show then be prepared to tell. If you don't want to tell, then don't show.
Anyway, I don't want to start a thread jack. This is a very nuanced and passionate topic and should probably be discussed in a separate thread. Just to add this, just because I think the show but don't tell concept is bad, that does not mean that I think the people who practice it are bad. To paraphrase; One idea does not an individuals personality make.
David, I like the map. Thanks for the work on it, it is cool.

Excellent work! I didn't think it gave away any secrets, and it presented information in a new graphic way. Thanks, Dave!

In my line of work I've been working with Geographic Information Systems for a while, and I love Google earth and I think what Dave did was pretty cool. And no secrets were given away. I'm actually not that concerned about secrets being lost to people who are going to enjoy them. Theres not that many people that are motivated enough to actually take the initiative to go into the BC any ways. The thing is, that some of the BC trails are more or less bootlegs. When trail names and locations show up on this site, and places like google earth. They pop up on search engines.
For instance, one of my favorite trails is on semi-public land. If local residents were to do an online search on that area, and found that there was an unsanctioned ski trail up there, they might bring up liability concerns at the next town meeting. Next thing you know, the no skiing signs are up. I've worked in municipal management for 10 years, I know how these things work.
Edit: Bootleg meaning: A trail on public land that has been built, and maintained (cutting, and pruning) without permission.

You guys hear about google giving out their mapping tools, so you can make maps and upload them, and give google earth a more personal feel, I guess they would implement the info into their database of info.
pretty neat, haven't used it yet though, but when I find some time, I will.
I bet theres a way to make really cool maps for yourself with that too.

Whicked Kewl! Sorry I messed it up. Can't help those kind of things in my vocation.
I don't think anything untowards has been exposed in the way of "secret beta" so all is good. If you don't want peeps to know, then don't say... it's that simple.... Just tell and show me in person and the world will be alright. ;) :p

Very cool David. Hope you didn't miss too much school to do all this work.
I'm from the western school where all this stuff isn't such a big secret. People actually make very detailed guide books out there. There's also enough space where running into somebody else in the bc is a nice change from the solitude. I guess there's just a lot more to share out there.
