I have a question regarding your expert opinion on what DIN setting to use. I used a pair of demos a few weeks ago at Tucks. The guy that set me up with the skiis had to set the DIN based on my iformation and told me that if I wanted, I could crank it up myself. I cranked the DIN up to 10. I know that the last thing that I want is for my skiis to release. I haven't had to yet, but in a self arrest situation, I would much rather have a ski on my feet than just ski boots. So, I got my skiis tuned after replacing the bindings, and now I have completely new (to me) bindings. They are racing bindings and they go from a DIN setting of 7 all the way up to 14 or something. So, I guess what do you guys suggest I set it to?

The second part of my question is regarding the inferno race. If it's moved to Hillmans, is it still okay to hike up hillmans for non-racers? If not, could we hike up left gully and traverse over to dodges and ski out the bottom of hillmans without getting yelled at?

Also, why hasn't the webcam been up and running? Isn't now the time where it is most useful?

Thanks in advance!!!

I'd rather have my skis on in a fall, but then again cranking the DIN way up is a scary thought too (didn't help the 'Man Who Skied Everest' as I recall). My opinion anyways... Perhaps compromise on the DIN and wear a good helmet, and clothing that isn't too slippery. Windbreaker type material is deadly if you fall since its near impossible to self arrest (see some of the body slide videos (http://timefortuckerman.com/videos.html) to see for yourself).

Last year the Inferno ended up on Hillmans since the lip wasn't skiable the day of the race. If the race is on Hillmans, I'm not sure what they did about non racers... I'd opt for the bowl if conditions are suitable.

Regardless if the race is held on Hillmans just ask one of the race officials (should be somebody around HoJo's) about the issue. Based on current conditions, I'm betting the race will be held over the lip as planned. You could also ask the race organizers by emailing mailto:info@friendsoftuckerman.orginfo@friendsoftu ckerman.org</a> .

The webcam hasn't worked in a while now. Its run by the Mount Washington Observatory. All we can do is hope they fix it soon.

DIN is all based on speed. I have had 14s come off like that (snap) in a mogul line while going at a pretty good clip. But skiing a real steep slope at a 9 and it will take a tweak of the knee to get them out. So if you have 14s crank em to 10 or so and as long as you arent toni matt they wont come off...If you weigh more than 180 I would go up into the teens...
