hey guys, hope everyone is doing good. can't wait to meet some of you this
spring. got a question. i rode the ravine last spring with my brother for the first time. the sherbie was all melted by the time we went, so we hiked up and down. i was trying to go a little earlier this year, but i want to take my girlfriend who doesn't ski or snowboard. has anyone ever ridden an inner tube down the sherbie? i know everyone might now be pleased with the idea, but i was wondering if maybe i could snowboard down and she could sit in the inner tube while i steer her down with a rope? what is everyone's opinion? if its a dumb idea, just say so. well actually i know its a dumb idea but i was wondering if it is possible.

Wow, so many scenarios cross my mind when I think of this. Well, it is definitely possible, however a snowboard + rope + innertube = you and your girl possibly ending up on the next Vonage commercial, or at the very least You Tube. I wouldn't recommend it. The resulting carnage that could manifest itself, wouldn't be limited to you two. It could also impact (literally) other skiers/riders coming down as well as skinning up. If you are insistent of having her follow you down, I would suggest a Swiss Bob, or another type of small scale sled that could be controlled more easily. Just my opinion.

I f I were able to express myself in type written language I would have said exactly what 172Recon has discribed. save the tube for the lower headwall. At least there you will recieve applause and echos heard down in Pinkham :tube:

I wouldn't recommend it. The resulting carnage that could manifest itself, wouldn't be limited to you two. It could also impact (literally) other skiers/riders coming down as well as skinning up. I agree that the tube towed by a board is a bad idea. As a boarder and skier, I think I can appreciate the limitations in controling a sled a boarder has compared to a tele or alpine skier. I'll gladly pull gear in a sled skiing or skinning, but have given up on my board and prefer to carry a pack. And my gear is presumably lighter (like 50 lbs.) and less valuable than your girlfriend. Another problem is inability of the occupant to control the tube, which is limited to digging in with your feet into the ski trail - a serious breach of the etiquette and prime directive of the sherbie: Be considerate; hiking on the ski trail can ruin the skiing for others, so please use the hiking trail if you are not skiing or riding back down to the parking lot. I don't know about the swiss bob either - maybe, but given the 2000 vert of the trail, narrow spots, tight turns, bumps and varied pitches, I don't think that's a great idea either. If she has to sled down, maybe a MR Rocket or other very manuverable sled, but you're prolly still gonna get some dirty looks.

Yeah, you're probably right about that. I figured, at the very least, you could use your feet to slow yourself down on the Bob.

I think I agree with the rest of the posters so far. If you do attempt it, check the conditions on the avalanche page beforehand. The Sherburne, in addition to being narrow, can be rough with waterbars, drifts, scrub, rocks, bare spots, and other vegetation/unexpected surprises, which could make it tough to control a tube, and also possibly dangerous.

As 172Recon mentioned...you might end up on YouTube. So bring a camera, and make sure to give all the T4Ters the link!!!

On a more serious note though, I do tend to agree with most people here. I imagine what your plan is, but think about it: would you really want to have 100 #s (rought estimate. replace with actual number) attached by rope to you for the ride down the Sherbs? Also, while it may be able to stop her, will you be able to control her from hitting trees? And more importantly, will you be able to control yourself? Twisting your upper body would require some MAJOR effort.

I think your idea will work great, but you're going to need to be really drunk, and probably naked.

If your GF can steer a sled, the Sherby is legit for that purpose. If she can't sled, there remains only one clever ploy...if you are serious about her....walk down w/her on the TRT.

IMHO (I am not an authority) if you aren't putting postholes in the sherby you won't upset anyone trying to slide down, messing up the skiing/riding for others.

If you're not walking at all - i.e. pushing rocks/dirt/etc. down the trail - then you won't be upsetting the forest service people who put that trail there specifically for skiing. My read on it is that when you HIKE (vs. ski) you do a lot more damage as far as erosion etc.

So the question is - how much of the above damage would she be doing. I'd say slide the top 1/3 and evaluate if it's working and if not take the cut over and walk the rest of the way. Try really hard not to walk at ALL on the sherby though.

As for personal safety: I ain't going there! I doubt you can help her navigate at all with any rope system etc. I envision myself trying to ride a tube down, probably head first dragging my feet for control and I'm not sure I could do it. There's a couple of steep pitches I'm afraid I wouldn't feel safe enough to do and I'd be tempted to walk - which would post hole and mess it up.

Whatever you do, DO NOT let her slide down the Tuckerman trail at all, one or two sliders and the whole thing turns to ice for the hikers.

Those are my thoughts. And that's all I have to say about that.

Personally I'd save the tube for apreski fun... a lot safer than a tube on the sherbie! There's a lot of gravity to deal with on that trail...

You tube on YouTube..... kinda smacks of irony don't it?

I've done the tobaggan sled(shallow bathtube style) down the Sherbie a couple times and getting to the steep pitches demands a means to scrub speed or ELSE! Not being a boarder, I cannot say if tethering would work... but think of this, if you went down(slipped and landed on your chest or whatever) then both of you would careen into the woods at potentially speed.(I've witnessed this with serious repercussions/concussions!)

If she were ride the tube at all, limit it to the upper portion of Sherbie and bail out to the THT upon reaching the 1st steep pitch heading down. Just don't try it and end up postholing the trail... it begets bad karma for both of you.

Or be a gentleman and hike down WITH her on the THT. Do bring a tube or :chair: for the bowl..... comfort AND fun all rolled together! :D

That poo rep was uncalled for... It was a good and valid question to ask. Hey, at least Diddler asked before even attempting it. I commend you for it and even repped you to offset that poo.

Don't sling it if you can't back it up. Sure, some things may deserve a poo rep but a somewhat new person to the forum doesn't deserve that until they really stick their foot in it after they've proved some intelligence. Cut some slack here fellas. Will ya?

Yeah, and along those same lines, if she isn't hot, you have to rep each and every T4Ter who participated in this thread...it's only fair.
