I realllly want to get up there this week, but its not looking good for going w/ my buddies which would help some of the lodging costs. I've never been and have no idea what kind of lodging is within half hour or so driving. Anybody have any thoughts on finding a cheaper place to stay?

I had a friend stay at the Inglenook a few weeks ago, its right on 242 and is like 2 minutes away. I don't know how expensive it is though, he said it was decent.

I've stayed at this little motel in Troy/North Troy for $40/nt .... can't remember right off the name of the place. It really isn't much but a roof over your head and the old man(owner) might have a cpl brews with ya. The lady will cook a great breakfast if you're still there in the morning and it was included! These were prices from '05 and I don't know if the old guy is still alive.

That's the North Troy Inn, and I haven't been there in 8 years, so it's good to know that they kept going through 2 years ago. It was $25 a night and simple as hell, but homey in a completely matter-of-fact sort of way. Give them a call and let us know if they're still at it: 802-988-2527

Russ was still at it last season....$25 per night breakfast included. 7 miles from Jay Peak.

He is a real character, a true old timer. It is the only place we stay when we go to Jay. I left a gift of beers for Rider Steve there last year and Steve never got them as Russ seemed to have enjoyed them himself...which is fine by me.

Hope he (and it) is still running.

REMEMBER folks..... if you do stay there and can buy beer. Leave Russ a few(good ones.... no light crap or bud, etc) and say it's from the guys on Time For Tuckerman (and yourself of course).... he has taken a liking to us tuckermaniacs.

I seem to recall hearing that Russ passed away last year and his daughter had taken over the business. However, I am dredging this up from some far corner of my brain, so I may be wrong.

Havn't been there since Christmas 05 so it could be. He was up there 8 years ago the first time I stayed there. He had some good stories about working on and flying early helicopters. His thoughts about the demise of JFK jr were always entertaing too.

Yes, the daughter is now running it. Price went up to $40/night or somesuch. Still the cheapest deal for a single.

If you have a partner, the Newport City Inn (or something like that) is a good deal at $79 for a room with two doubles (could be a bit more, Seeker would know). They have a nice pool and hot tub and the Brown Cow diner nearby is very fine - 1/2 hour from Jay in Newport.

Haha, the North troy Inn has a pretty funny answering machine "we could be painting something, we could be in the basement building something, we could be outside walking the dog....oh thats right, we dont have a dog".

Called a couple other places and will consult with the other person going. Anybody planning on hitting Jay tomorrow or friday? Its canada week or something, is it gonna be crowded up there, I have no idea what canada week means as far as crowds at resorts?

Yay! Go Canada! http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k97/Adventure_2006/CANflag.gif

I have little clue as to what Canada Week is other than an excuse to celebrate and buy beers for our neighbors to the north. http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k97/Adventure_2006/beerbrat.gif

Just for reference for anyone looking for cheaper places to stay up there, here a few places I called. rates are for 2 people, 2 beds, per night

Grampa Grunts - 31 per person
Inglenbrook Inn - 133 package deal per person including tickets, dinner, breakfast
North Troy Inn - 65 a night w/ breakfast
Newport City Motel - 72
Snowline - 95 I think, couldnt hear the lady too well
Derby Super 8 - 72
Border Motel (apparently an hour away) - 67

May join the rest of our friends at Crotched Mountain for Midnight Madness on the way back, that would be an ambitious couple days of riding, haha.

It is Quebec week at Jay this week which coincides with their school break. Jay is owned by a Quebec company......so that could have something to do with the marketing.

The rest of Canada is still at it. I think the Ontario break is next week.
