So I see this place is only open fri-sun and "powder daize". This I assume is very subjective? These pd's come on any day during the week mon-thurs., right. I guess my question how do you know its open before you schlep up there? Call at like at 6am?

official response:

"To notify our guests of upcoming "powder daize", snowfalls, events, etc.
etc., we send out a "mass email" alert to everyone in our email address
book. You can do it yourself by going to www.plattekill.com and on the home page put your address in our "join our address book" box. If you'd like us to add you, let us know!

Also, all "powder daize" openings are announced on our website home page in
the "hot news" and on our phone recordings at 800-need-2-ski.
all depends on when the 12" falls...always varies!! We try to give as much
notice as possible. thanks and think snow!!!"

so thats that. could anyone recommend a good cheap place is to stay nearby? i know of one in phonecia...dmc?

yeah, doesnt look like it. cripe, the place is ~30 miles from phonicia. thats good for what 40-45 minutes. man its 3-3.5 to phonicia from here so i was thinking of shackin up there. 6" last night and a few more nickels and dimes make friday look worthy.

crazy, how do they get so much more than hunter? woods are good too?

Woods are good at Hunter but require lots of work to get fresh now..

Most of the places to stay in the area are bit dumpy. I spent alot of weekends in the area downhilling. The mexican place in phonicia is crap, as is most of the food in the area.

We headed up there during our first big storm a week or two ago and stayed at the Roxbury which is a great motel but rooms start at $90. It's only 5miles from the parking lot but we found out Plattekill wasn't open and we had to back track to Belleayre!
I think they allow you to camp in their parking lot for $5.
