the latest pictures posted at www.tuckerman.org. There was quite a fracture and release in the chute, must have been 8 foot plus crown. I wander how long it gonna take to fill in.

Seeker, are you perhaps looking at the old photo on the home page? If you look at the most recent pics, there's one from 1/3/07 (captioned "Fracture Line in Chute Triggered by Rain"), with an ice axe punched in at the base of the crown, which extends at least 4 ice axe lengths above the top of the axe. Pretty serious deal.

Ahhh--got it. Duh.
Thanks!
Would like to see the runout from that one.

8 feet? how did that happen??

Well, I was only guessing it was about eight feet based on the height of the ice ax in the picture. However, the Chute been one of the only areas collecting and keeping snow since October. Whether it's 6 or 8 feet I can't tell for sure, but it's a big crack and would provide much air if it becomes skiable anytime soon. With the rising temps, it will be interesting to see the snow stability on Saturday which could be the day to hit the Chute or Left Gully.
Edited to add: I guess with the new weather expected maybe Saturday will not be so good.

I'd imagine that the snow got saturated with rain and just gave when the weight got too much...

Stability is probably going to get worse through the weekend with more of the infernal :badwords: coming. I too would like to see the runout and what's left in the chute... probably a bunch of avy debris and ice covered rocks at this point.

No way thats an 8 FOOT crown. That s silly. If that Ice axe is about 60cm (roughly 2 feet) id say at max it was 5-6 foot not to mention if yo look at the pic, it angles down on the left.....
Rain. adds weight, breaks down bonds, and lubricates....

many mountaineering ice axes are in the 72-74cm range (that's what I use), so it could be about 7 feet or more at its highest point.

ha! thanks! not to belabor the point, but 74 centimeter = 29.133 858 268 inch. Three times that (the crown looks to extend that high at least at the highest point) is 87.4", divided by 12 = 7.2 feet.
So, I guess it's correct to say that it's anywhere from 5 - 7.5 feet!
It's fargin' big either way! :D

so my guess of 6-8 ft is pretty near the 5-7.5 foot range.
Why did they not take some more pictures of this massive slide?
