With all the questions on what was skiable up at Mt. Washington. I went back to my pictures from mid May of the Great Gulf. Here is one stitched together, taken from just past the summit of Mt. Clay, back towards the headwall. Note all the skiible gullies are on the wall to the right. I still can't see where the "mystery patch" of snow is. Maybe, just maybe it is the horizontal patch on the far left side of the photo near the ridge. Or maybe it is one of the dead end short gullies right below the summit.

And one final picture to tide you over the hot July 4th weekend, of a few prime skiable gullies. Airplane and Pipeline (circa May 15th)

The days are definitely getting shorter!

Sony DSC-P1. It is a few years old now, but the size was great (good by todays standards), the battery life is as good as it gets. Sometimes I wish I had a bit more zoom.

One more from April02.

Thanks. Outstanding pics, Castlerock. I don't think you'd get as good a sense of the steepness with too much more zoom.

I'm using the last one as a screensaver.

A couple more. The chute is an awesome run. Especially on a day like this when it is Alaskan smooth....

Hey DMC (you need a graemlin): Are you there? You are the only browser I recognize.

I'm North of Boston, at the shore, staying with  and plan to blast up to briefly check out the Gulf and Tenney tomorrow. I've never gone up this way...I'll be going up Rt 93. Do you (or anyone else browsing) know the fastest roads off Rt 93 to get to the Gulf?

Do you know how to apply :ducttape: such that skis stay together, but the bases don't rub? Do you put anything between the bases? (Where is :ma: when you need him?)

I'll try to check back later tonight - I'm at a relic of a computer with a nebulous connection.

BTW, picked up a throw-away camera, so I should be able to document conditions from both places.

Hopefully, :skifemcool:

Duct tape the tips together, that's all I do. Trick to keeping them off your calves is the height. I've found I need them a few inches higher on the hike down.

It may seem like heresy here, and I too am a member of the duct tape is good for everything church, but I find that the velcro ski straps available at any ski shop are perfect for strapping the skis together. They keep the bottoms seperate, and leave no "unsightly" residue! I have never tried duct tape for this however, I just haven't seen the need....

Duct tape prevents slippage, the straps do not. That's the reason I use duct tape. The straps are great if you've got very good attachment to the back-pack which prevents any movement up or down. If there's any movement potential, the duct tape keeps you level.

I still fail to see why anyone would EVER place themselves on the opposite side of a duct tape argument.

What do you people have against duct tape?

If I ever run for office, my platform will be "Extend the Egg Nogg Season" and "End the Duct Tape Tax!"

Uhhhh.....
I guess I worked out the pack kinks a while ago. The straps function is to hold the tips together as you surmised....

A duct tape in every pot!

Checked out the gulf on Saturday. I'm sending the images to skicdave to post as a snow report - check later. I found snow, but it wasn't on any reachable trail. I believe it was about 2/3 of the way down pipeline. Despite the lack of :skiplow: , the overall experience was totally awesome. I'm really glad I went. :D

Still having :ducttape: issues M@ - as one of the photos sort of demonstrates.... My pack still migrates into an H-frame from the A-frame. The whole system seems to bounce around a lot. The duct tape was stretched nearly apart by the end, and the back of my legs are ...yeeeeecccchhh...

And, Castlerock - how did you deal with the rocks at the summit (see rock photo)? Up, maybe. I can't imagine climbing down them when there is ice and snow.

BTW, I found the Pinkham B short-cut...previously described....that cuts thru from Rt 2 to Dolly Copp. The turn-off is a right, which is just after a rest stop/hiking parking area, also on the right.

Everything else was uneventful, until stopped in NJ by a trooper on the way home. He really scared me. They shouldn't allow those guys to jump out of nowhere like that. The T4T ski-gods must have been smiling down on me - the guy gave me a break from a 4-point violation.....all's well that ends well. ;)

Skimum,

You're a speed demon both on skis and in your car huh? :)

No offense to our Jersey friends here at T4T, but I try to stay away from Jersey, especially the turnpike. Messy...

I've gotten them on 93 and 84 though....

Three times I have been in a car travelling on the NJTP and been pulled over. Luckily, I was not the driver on any of those occasions. But those guys sure shook us down!

I got pulled over for speeding and searched illegally on the Garden State Parkway for having a Greatful Dead sticker on my truck...

Case thrown out of court along with all the charges... And there were more than a few.. After I told my lawer and the Judge that my constitution rights had been violated. And if my lawer wasn't going to represent me - I'd be going to the ACLU... Lucky for me he NJ State Police was going through a BIG profiling law suite...
