Anybody have any experience or thoughts on climbing snowshoes? In particular the MSR Denali Ascent. I found reference to two other climbing snowshoes (Verts by C3 and similiar design by Dakine), but can't seem to find them anywhere on the net.
Sounds like they would be great for backcountry access, :tucks: especially steep packed :snowflakes:
Just can't afford to go the tele route. Must be better than post holing in fresh :snowflakes: , and more versatile than :crampons:
I think they would make a nice addition to my :santa: list.
MSR has shoes that fit board/skiboots based on the original Denali's: EVO (http://www.mgear.com/pages/product/product.asp?level1_id=0&level2_id=0&level3_id=0&item=640228&level2_title=)
I'm an Atlas shoer, but the Denali has shown tough in situations where I was sure they would break. Basically, you have to pay for the high end shoe you want....most of the top makers do a really good job with high end shoes that will handle steep slopes.
The test that really matters at this level is: How were they when you rented a pair? Most places will deduct all or some of the rental price from the final sale.

RR,
I am actually looking into the EVO. I left that out of the post.
Rent snowshoes in CT? I will have to check EMS. Although, that is a great idea. I will be in North Conway in December, definetly a few places there.
How well do your Atlas shoes climb?

I was actually looking at the 12 series (Atlas) online the other day....being a rider, I need a shoe large enuff for my boots........
kinda big $$$ though....
Mine are the old style 1033 models, the new Atlas crampons are way better. Still, I have traversed 30 degree ice on them with carbide tipped ski poles doing a lot of supprt work. The new ones are a bunch better, much like the Denali's in fact.
No complaints about going straight up and they surf okay on the way back down.
If there's a total heft over 240 lbs, check out the new 36 series Atlas, almost big enough to walk on water....NOT, but very floaty looking for those deep fresh days.
