View Full Version : Proposal: New Rating system
I make a motion we change the rating system to trail names.
I can code up a page that lets us vote on the difficulty of the trails. Just a list of the trails and a number 0-100 where you'd place it in the order of difficulty... then average them all out and we have our order.
Then the only decision is where to set the limit? We don't want EVERYONE to just move from TMC to <Hardest Trail>. My take on that would be it depends how many trail names we really have...probably something like 25... maybe Dave's 1000 is a good time to maybe set the limit at a kewl 2500. And spread the rest out along the way.
Oh, and we should leave the 100 marker as the Toni Matt Club entrance... effectivly grandfathering everyone with the current highest rating.
Big bug in this plan... last time we all talked about this we couldn't agree on the names.
Chute V? What is that?

Oh and I just posted about the level topic here (http://timefortuckerman.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000928) .
My morning thoughts and ramblings on this issue...
I think TMC should move to at least 500 and those below adjusted accordingly. Above 500 'maybe' a few different TMC levels... will have to think about this. Having too many levels waters down the whole concept. 10 levels would be fine though in my books. A top level should be in around 1000 posts.
I generally like the current level name concept as they follow the typical trek up to tucks that different people take. Some only make it as far as the shop at Pinkham Notch to buy a 'This body shopped Pinkham Notch!' tee shirt, some just hike up to HoJo's, some only skis the Sherburne, some make it up a little higher, some go just to watch at Lunch Rocks. Ok then we have Headwall Master... we could add a few levels at this point for various skier/rider types and levels of experience such as (rambling thoughts here)...
Left Gully Master
Left Chute Master
Lip Master :eek:
Headwall Master
Dodges Drop Master
Hillmans Highway Master
BUT we should chose a few that are obvious to most, that they are more difficult or less difficult than another level. The important thing to remember is that T4T attracts a diverse audience. Levels shouldn't be something that only those with vast Tucks experience could comprehend.
We currently have 7 levels, I think we can go for 10 so that leaves 3 more to add.
Also I should point out that I can give individual members a custom title. Thus current TMC members could retain their current TMC level, however from this point on other members would have to work up to the new TMC level requirement of, say 500 or 1000.
Ok here is first draft...
1 - Pinkham Notch Visitor -> 0-9 Postings
2 - HoJo's Or Bust -> 10-30 Postings
3 - Lunch Rock Dude -> 31-49 Postings
4 - Sherburne Trail Master -> 50-99 Postings
5 - Little Headwall Master -> 100-199 Postings
6 - Hillmans Highway Master -> 200-399
7 - Left Gulley Master -> 400-599
8 - The Lip Master -> 600-799
9 - Headwall Master -> 800-999 Postings
10 - Toni Matt Club -> 1000+ Postings (current TMC members grandfathered)
Thoughts on my ramblins?? :reading:

Just my two cents...I'd rather not be grandfathered. I'd rather work my way up like new people do...

Ya but once your butt has been planted in the club house it is hard to give up the warmth of the fire and the sweet kiss of a ****tail. Plus Dave would have no one to talk to in there till others catch up.

I think that the final decision rests with you, Dave. You have done a great job in my opinion and it's definitely one of the best set-up and most interesting sites that I've ever been too.
I would like some clarification. As I understand what you're proposing; those who are Tony Matt Club members presently will be grandfathered. Will someone like myself for example that has some 50+ postings be 'prorated'? If I am halfway to Tony Matt now, will I be bumped up to 500+ so that the Tony Matt Club doesn't become practically unreachable?
Another thought that I will throw out. If the numbers are increased, is there a risk that some members will enter chincey posts just to boost their levels?
Thanks in advance.

About Grandfathering. You could chose if you want to regarding that. Be grandfathered or not. Its just that now the level requirement spread doesn't work well with the highest level being only 100. I think the current TMC members who have done well to keep the site active througout the summer, rather than just spring (March-June) have done a great job and deserve to retain TMC status. These are the members that have 'brought alive' T4T this year.
Grandfathering by the way is accomplished by an override/custom user title which I add manually to member records.
Hopefully chincey posts will be at a minimum... might get members thinking anyways about topics they were too embarrassed to talk about to date :eek:
Unfortunately it would be too difficult to grandfather current non TMC members. Look on the bright side TenSeven, you would be one of the first to attain the elusive 'Lip Master' :lips: status at 600 posts.

Don't get me wrong. I don't expect that anyone, who is not at the TMC level now, would get a free ride into the TMC under the new levels. Those of you in the TMC have done an excellent job keeping the site active and its been most entertaining.
If I got bumped to 500 to reflect that I was halfway to TMC when this new system came in, I'd be more than happy. If the members didn't think that was appropriate then I'm cool with that too. I'm here because I love Tucks and the Applachians. I enjoy the jokes, banter, debates and the information shared here.
Chincy posts to boost levels? That's never happened.

TenSeven,
Grandfathering is done by overriding member titles, not # of posts. Post counts would stay the same and cannot be changed. Looking at the member directory, there is really only 3 or 4 including yourself TenSeven that get caught in any level revamp. We could make exception and consider your posts X 2 and move you up at some point. No problem. Just trying to avoid any issues that deflect with keeping T4T a fun open site.

Dave,
Thanks for the clarification. I was sweating alittle as I started reading the post. The thought of being kicked back to Little Headwall Master was FRIGHTENING. I blew off most of my work last week just to stay active so that I could make TMC.
I can't afford to post away throughout the day, I'll be out of job. It' great fun though.

I'm for grandmothering. Nothing else would be fair.
I like the idea of having higher levels be the trails, but the low levels can be the path up to TR (as it already is).
My only opinion about the structure is not to aim too low with the levels. Given the number of posts people make, we need levels to reach for. We don't want to need to redo it in another year....It should go at least to 5000 posts.

Or how about to keep the TMC members happy you could reach the Tony Matt Club as it is now. And after you could have different levels of TMC.
TMC - Lip Master
TMC - Chute V Master

TMC - Lip Master
TMC - Chute V Master Hmmm... that sounds like a plan Jolly J. I'd like to increase the spread to the basic TMC level however. How about TMC at 250? Then would be say 3 to 5 levels of 'TMC - whatever', topping out at a whopping 5,000 posts as per Mumster.

Sounds good, but I think the TMC should be down to about 250 instead of 1000. Especially with that new enticing forum on the topic list, 1000 posts seems to be quite a lot. Even over at telemarktips.com I only have about 220-some posts, and I've been hanging there for most of the summer...posting and stuff (I was a lurker during the spring). Anyway, I don't mind working my way up; it was actually pretty cool to see the ratings change, although I did think that 10 post intervals were a little short. Just my thoughts.
I agree with the idea that TMC should have several levels, with the threshold being lower.
