Are you guys afraid to drink the water out of the creek...

I am... I bring my purifier and 2 Nalgene's everywhere with me... A couple of years ago we ran out of water at the Ravine and couldnt find the creek at the entrance to the ravine.. We searched around until I heard a cracking noise and my friend say "Found it" He fell through the snow and was up to his knee on one leg...

We also pump water above the headwall as well.. Sometimes in the Alpine Garden which I don't like and also where the "rock pile" starts - which I prefer...

I ran out of water once druring a summit bid and it svcked... We thought about just using snow from the snowfield.. But if you look at that snow closeup it is filled with tons of bugs... That was the year we rode from the summit back down to Hojos... What a dyhydrated blast...

I've alway thought of the Cutler River to be sewage run off for the most part. Think about all the people in the ravine during a busy spring day. I'd say at least half relieve themselves. That's a lot of pee.

I filter everything anywhere anytime. I still have the parasites (giardhea sp?) flare up once in a while from a white water canoe trip 3 years ago. The meds cleared it up for the most part but as I understand it you never really get rid of it.

Wow Bannick - that blows... It's like herpies or something...

Last year we were talking to a guy who was sucking water right out of the creek by the bridge at Hojos...
He told us - "If your used to it - you wont get sick"... I don't believe that...

There could be a dead animal rotting in the creek 100 yards upstream and you wouldn't know. It's just dumb to not filter.

Health tip of the day:
Avoid Giardia lamblia -> Caused by a protozoan that parasitizes the GI tract. Cysts inhabit cold water supplies including remote surface water and well water. Beavers are alternate resevoirs. Chemoprotection is not particularly effective. Nor is chlorine.
Boiling, some disinfectants and filtration work.

Drink the water? -> Explosive diarrhea. Not a pretty site...

Drink the water? -> Explosive diarrhea. Not a pretty site... [/QB]:outhouse: for distance is ever so much fun!!

I lost 17 lbs in a little over two weeks. Forcing myself to eat knowing it wasn't going to do much good. The meds were pretty horrible too nasty metallic taste in my mouth for weeks after, no appitite at all. All I wanted to do was sleep.

So being in the know and all do you know if there is any truth to what my doctor said that you never really get rid of those little buggers? I am all for hosting a party but sheesh every now and then wammo the parasites turn it on again.

I was the only one on the trip that got it too there were 12 of us. I found out soon after from my aunt that I had it when i was like 8 or something too. Which may explain why I got it again. I have actually started carrying water in on long trips (which sucks) as I do not want to be in the middle of a 6 day paddle and get hit again.

M@'s expierence:
I pack in an empty 3 gallon type water bag. I fill it in the stream right next to HoJo's and treat it with iodine.

I've gotten sick twice on this plan. Sickness was a tight stomach that was gone in a day, but it kinda sucked being just a little sick, combined with lack of sleep it kinda put a hitch in my get-a-long.

I think filtering would be better. Extreme advice involves boiling all water. Sigh, what a pain.

Beer: A most excellent way of choosing your micro-organisms. I hear our founding fathers drank many beers, becuase it was safer than any water they could find.

Oh: Here's a joke- What's the difference between lite and hard? Ans: You can sleep with a lite on.

The drugs do reasonably well getting rid of the little pests -> in most cases, when relapses occur, it is within the first 2 months. If the problem persists, your Partner(s) and other close contacts should be examined. Any others who are infected should be treated even if they are asymptomatic, or they can pass it back to you.

If you were adequately treated and it recurred long afterwards, consider other explanations, like lactose intolerance.

Nice dinnertime conversation... :(
Good luck.

Thanks mums! We thought about that angle too and I have chnaged roomates 4 times in the las 3 years and the lactose thing is a wash too. The next big bout of whatever it is will see me back at the DR. to hopefully figure it out.

I didn't bring enough water my first trip and there I was, eyeing this cool refreshing stream. But the guy manning HoJos that day said "don't do it" without a filter or iodine and I listened. Wanted to enjoy the rest of the trip. And not end up like Bannick... ;)

I hope Friends of Tuckerman.org (http://www.friendsoftuckerman.org) get their money and logistics together soon. It would be nice to have fresh water all year long.

wake and bake? now we're getting into a whole nuther subject... :D
in my newbie tuck days as i was just getting the bug for it, i was naive and would drink out of the streams. LUCKILY never got sick. i did that for the first couple of times and finally grew a brain and started bringing a filter EVERY trip. it is not worth it in my eyes. and for beer... there are not many things better than cracking a cold one atop yer run. i have also found that rumplemintz makes a pretty tasty treat at the end of the day as it's starting to get a chill in the air on overnights

Ah yes, the good ol' wake and bake. Always the first order of business on a campling trip, even before business and coffee... When we hiked up Mt. Abe the other week at 4:30am, we were hitting the W&B at 4am. It was awesome!

What brand of water filters do you use?

What do you like and dislike and hate about your filter?

DMC
08-26-2003, 11:55 AM
I forget which brand I use offhand...

The biggest problem is freezing.. You gotta clear the water out after using it... And that doesnt always mean it not gonna freeze up on you.

I guess what I'm trying to say is - make sure you can field strip it down to chip the ice out...

Also if your crew has more than one - only use one at a time. Keep a spare to use if it freezes..

i got an MSR that screws on to nalgenes. it's good because of that feature, but can be a bit slow. it's easy to take apart tho.

DMC

It's gotta have a Nalgene adapter or dont get it... Makes pumping so much easier..

Hmm, that would involve having a radio. Maybe there could be an identifying shout to any TFT members in the vicinity. Loke calling out "Who are we?" and the reply "TFT", except something not so lame. Or maybe I should just invest in a radio. or a filter.

Funny...
You should get a radio for safety...
Or at least a whistle...

If I hear a whistle by the creek I'll come running to you like you were a Damsel in destress!

I use the "First Need" filter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Absolute rating of 0.01 micron and 3+ litres a minute (in actual use). It's all you need, period. Water tastes like water, no smell - no taste added, none.

Winter caution, the canister will freeze. I usually remove the canister and ziplock it, then keep it in the bivvy with me overnights. Boots are in my oversized bag anyway, what's one more lump gonna do?

But, for winter tenting I boil...gotta melt the snow anyway if there's no running water. The wieght of the extra fuel for a weekend is about the same as a filter.
