Hey Everyone:
300 days until M@'s 2004 Trip. (http://www.weirdtable.org/~m/tuckerman/2004/)

Was talking to the Wife about this trip, and since she doesn't ski (doesn't ski tuckerman that is, she skiis great everywhere else) she probably won't come. She likes to go and picnic on the rocks on a nice day, so it looks like I'll have to go twice next year. Once to ski down the sherburn, and again when the weather is warmer.

M@ Thats *exactly* what I was talking about with my sweetie yesterday. Once around the first week of April, and another in mid May (depending on how snowy next season is). Till then I'll have to content myself with gazing at my :tucks: "Tuckerman's Spring Skiing" poster above my desk at work.

Hey M@,

I know Dr Phos and I want to go a couple of times next year. Maybe we can coordinate with you so we can all meet up. We definitely want to ski all the way down next year!

M@

Co-ordination is key. The only reason I'd think of planning this trip one year out is becuase I want to share it with as many people as possible.

Put it in your palm pilot, or write it on your wall. Write it on the inside of your ski jaket, then you'll remember when it's most important.

APRIL 10th, 2004

300 DAYS!

(To be accurate, that's 300 days until the saturday of the weekend I will be going. This first trip will be an overnighter with a thursday night big fat moon hike up)

M@ Hey M@:

Love your attitude :ma: - already doing a 2004 countdown. You are a true inspiration ....

Like some others, I'm also hoping to do two trips next spring - one where we can ski all the way, and a later one.

I've got your date etched into my palm pilot. And, I am hoping to arrange a second trip around skicdaves trip. I'm sure the skidude :skicool: will come, probably both trips, and hopefully we can drag Hubby up for at least one trip.

Hey, Slightly off topic, but when you guys say Palm Pilot, do you really have a Palm? Or is it a PDA by another brand? Palm hasn't impressed me with theirs products lately. I really like the Dell PDA and the Compaq iPAQ. But I still haven't decided which to get...

DMC

I use a Handspring - Visor..
I like them because they have expansion slots for modems, GPS, MP3 players, etc... But Handspring was just bought out by Palm...

A friend of mine got a Sony Clique(sp?) - it's pretty cool...

Its in my Palm (tm) pilot as well. I'd also like to coordinate the second trip w/ Dave as well. That said, it sounds like for the first trip I'll have to hook up with folks already there b/c I'll be staying overnight somewhere warm and snug in Jackson, perferably with a :hottub: and will hike up in the morning.

WARNING: Extreme Geek Content follows, sorry so verbose.

I've gone through maybe 6 palms, through destruction and upgrade. My latest is a Palm m515, which I got about a month ago through a user-return deal for about $180. There's plenty more available. I also write software for palms. I had a palm V for a long time. Only thing I wanted more of was memory, so the m515 upgrade got me to 16M and color as a benny.

Of interest to this forum: I keep track of trips sometimes on the palm. Just a quick note every once in a while. It's really nice to go back and review things and stuff you might have forgot, or important info like email or just a persons name. I've got a couple of these logs for tuckerman trips:
2000 (http://www.weirdtable.org/~m/tuckerman/2000/PalmLog.htm)
2001 (http://www.weirdtable.org/~m/tuckerman/2001/log.htm)
2002 (http://www.weirdtable.org/~m/tuckerman/2002/open.htm)
2003 (http://www.weirdtable.org/~m/tuckerman/2003/palmlog.htm)

The actual log entry is just a quick tap for a time/datestamp and then some short note that I can edit later. I sometimes add a lot more to the entry when I put it on the web.

Another VERY kewl use of the palm is reading eBooks. I read a lot before I got the palm, and I read even more now, becuase it's very easy. I could go into a whole spiel about the negatives I hear, but they are all moot. "What's wrong with a real book?" "The feel of the paper and easy of use" "Something about nostalga", let me tell you, reading on the palm is excellent. Never loose your place, always have it with you, tons of books to download for free. Not all books are on the palm, so I still read a book or two on paper now and then, but mostly I like to read on the palm. This is also good for trips like hojo-leanto. If you can't sleep (i.e. snoring) you can pass the time reading a book, and the backlight eliminates the need for a flashlight. My wife also likes that I don't need a light on in the bedroom to read anymore.

Hey, Slightly off topic, but when you guys say Palm Pilot, do you really have a Palm? Or is it a PDA by another brand? I have a Palm, but am using a visor now. The visor is problematic - it erased its memory, and doesn't want to reaccept the info from the back up. Also, it doesn't hold a charge well. So, I may switch to the Palm.

I really want a pilot that has an endless battery, immeasurable amounts of memory and NEVER erases anything ....

There is nothing more FREAKIN' ANNOYING than having the devise zero out when you need a piece of info, quick.......

If any of you fellow geeks are looking into purchasing a new PDA, look no further than the Dell Axim X5 (http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/products/model_pda_axim5_entry.htm) There are cheaper models, but this thing rocks. I highly recommend it, and it has gotten a multitude of excellent reviews. Plus Dude, it's a Dell! (tounge in cheek there)

If you can handle using a Windows platform, this is the best PDA out there, IMHO.

Also M@, In my graduate program (which is completely online), all we use are e-books, I think they are great!

Wow a three banger! i don't know if i will be in all weekend, but probably will zip over on friday afternoon and make the hike up, is thers less of a problem getting space in the :shelters: that time of year? if we can't get in we will probably hit joe dodge, and roll up early am sat.
so it's on!!! we will see you there! 4/10/04 10 days too early, but we will make due! :D

M@
06-16-2003, 01:22 PM
Yo DrP:
If you've got friends in a lean-to, you've generally got room too. Past 3 years we've had someone coming up friday or sat night who didn't get an "offical" lean-to spot. It works out, when it's full, there's a little room left, if you don't mind sleeping 12 to a lean-to. I think they fill when it's 10 per leanto? I'm not sure, but every year we've had people poach who we knew, and there was room.

Also the 3-night stay is really only 2, cause you don't need dinner the first night. And dinner's tend to be the heaviest to hike up meals. Thursday night is usually a midnight arrival and just crash.

midnight arrival, you are hardcore!!! sounds good though i will be there and i am sure that elwood will be accompanying me. there could be some others who want to go, but you know how that works! everyone wants to go untill its time to go. Will both trails be snowcovered 4-10-04 up and down? so i would want some :crampons: or yak trax or :happyhiker: somthing? or will i be fine just reverseing some :ducttape: and rigg some tac nails through the other side?

M@ M@ - If you cruise up at Midnight... How do you pay the guys a Pinkham Notch?

April 10th could be happening for me and my crew... I love the full moon weekends as well.. But we are talking about March as well.. So... Ahh... Who knows...

M@
06-16-2003, 02:52 PM
Midnight arrival means midnight arrival at Hojo Leanto. Usually means 9:30ish departure from Pinkham. I always pay for my spot, and am always legal (permitted?). I think the pinkham store closes around 10pm, maybe even 11pm, which works nicely for my plans.

Both trails are covered top to bottom at that time of year, but like I've said before, the snow is a nice soft corn snow and I've never wanted Crampons except on the HoJo->Bowl hike, and the Hojo->Pinkham hike down at the very beginning only. But we won't BE hiking down is the beauty!

DMC: I'm hoping for a 2 trip year next year, april and march.

LONG TIME, NO POSTS! Computer problems, etc. My big one crashed and I'm using an underpowered P.O.S. Got to get mine fixed soon, I'm going nuts 'cuz this thing is so pathetically slow. ANYWAYS!!!!!! Unless something like a major family emergency were to come up I'm gonna be in for April 10, 04. Been a long time since I've done much more than day trips. I was just starting to calm down from lack of snow withdrawal and then you come up with this!!! OK, 'nuff for now. the trick is how to get empty keg back down.....

Not to promote littering but the empty kegs might just make nice sit-down type furniture at HoJo's.....Or cut them open to make garbage cans. Or take them up to the top of the headwall in the snowless part of the year and have a competition to see who can heave them the furthest? (This will still require removal of the debris afterwards but it might be fun to try). WAIT!!!!!! 4th of July!!! Drill a hole in them, take them up above the headwall, fill them with cheap blasting powder, insert a long fuse and run like heck!!!! Imagine the surprise to the people that aren't in on it ahead of time??? Might be best not to admit that you were in on it, I suppose. People might get pissed because of the environmental impact, etc. Then again, this idea could possibly rearrange the terrain a bit so it might be best to forget that I even suggested it. Oh well, back to the furniture or trash can ideas, I guess. Have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:

Carrying the 5 gallon tube up wouldn't be that bad. It weighs the same as skiis+boots, I've checked. I wouldn't bring the Co2 though. And something tells me that 5 gallons wouldn't get completely kicked up there unless you had a big crew... well, I guess if you gave it away you could do a whole 5 gallons.

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure the keg would fit perfectly in my northface back, and be a piece of cake to bring up. But I wouldn't want to leave my skiis, so that gear would get split with the rest of the folks coming with me.

So I'll have some kegs ready for next year for sure. Maybe not the April 10 trip though, as it'll be cold then.

But the deal will be this: I bring the keg and someone else brings the rest of my gear. In return, all the beer you can drink!

Now the real question: What style of beer for a tuckerman trip??? First thought is IPA as it's the highest alcohol per weight I know of, and serves up real nice at many temperatures.

M@,

You can get the Co2 chargers that will snap right on to a ball lock (assuming you don't have a ancient Korny keg with pin locks :D ) Check it out here (http://www.morebeer.com/detail.php3?pid=KEG960)

There are also carbenator caps for 2 liter bottles that allow for a ball lock valve. Pretty ingenious, you fill a 2 liter with beer, screw the cap on, and then pressurize it with the Co2. (Wish I knew about these a couple of months ago...) Check it out here. (http://www.morebeer.com/detail.php3?pid=KEG580)

Elwood: Thanks for carbonation options... $120 is a big pricetag though, I am able to justify this hobby to the wife as a money-saving type thing. And yes, I still have pin-lock taps, and a beta-max for that matter.

For travel: I just fill a growler before leaving, we have a nifty growler-carrying bag with a MagicHat logo on it.

Glad you saw the brewing note! I was hoping someone would notice... Here's the recipie I made on saturday (I keep them in the palm, so there always handy, like right now):
---
McSwiggin's Irish Ale
6.6 lbs light malt syrup
1 lb 60L Crystal malt
4 oz roasted barley
5 oz corn sugar

1 oz challenger hops 60 min
1 oz fuggle hops 30 min
1 tps irish moss
1/2 oz kent golding 10 min
1/2 oz kent golding 15 min after boil

Wyeast #1084 Irish Ale Yeast
og 1055-1059
fg 1012-1016

brewed 2003-06-21
---
I didn't take gravity reading. The yeast is going like gang busters! First time I had to rig a blow-off tube on my 6 gallon glass carbouy. It didn't blow but was getting really close.

Looks like I'm gonna need a new sticker:

"This Keg Climbed Mount Washinton"

MMMmmm... fuggles

M@, that regulator I showed you was the nice one where you can set the pressure you want on your keg. There are other models that run about $20 and you just zap Co2 in until it flows, They work similar to the Co2 bike tire pumps. you screw in the cartridge and depress the lever. Not good if you're trying to force carbonate or regulate the amount of foam...

On another note, M@:

Do you ever prime the yeast when you use liquid? Or do you simply smack the pack, let it expand and pitch it?

I haven't used a primer and have had pretty good luck. Also, I have been getting into recycling my yeast (dumping trub off of my carboy). Saves a lot of money, and if you are trying to brew consecutive batches with the same results this is the way to go.

M@
06-23-2003, 06:48 PM
Elwood:
I smack + pitch. (after it expands, 24hr usually) Never failed. Tell me in detail how you reuse, I've never done it. I helped a guy harvest magic hat's yeast once, but I never used it, and he used it in a fruit beer(blue cerry).

Curses to #9 !

M@ :ducttape:

elwood
06-24-2003, 08:51 AM
The easiest way to harvest is if you have one of those racks for your carboy so you can turn it upside down. This essentially turns it into a conical fermenter. It has a valve that you can open up to dump off the trub. If you don't have one, and aren't interested in getting one you can still harvest the yeast. All you do is when you siphon off to secondary, just save the trub at the bottom of the primary. You will need to sanitize a container to keep it in (I use a plastic pint-sized container). I pour the trub into the container, and put some fresh (not exposed to air- take some off first) saran wrap over the top (the threads of the lid are a sweet place for bacteria to dwell, so this adds another protective barrier). Then put the lid on, and you can store it up to two weeks in the fridge. I wouldn't push it any more than 2 weeks, so you better be ready to brew again!!!

Here is the catch: as the yeast get older, it loses its strength. You need to start by brewing your highest gravity beer first (I usually do this in the winter and start with a dopplebock), and progressively go with lower gravity worts (Bock, Dunkel, Helles). Obviously, this really is efficient if you are brewing a lot and have the capacity for three or more beers to be in secondary at the same time. (I usually brew once a week for 4 weeks when I do this...) Although, I've found that making 3 gallon batches is ok, and a 3 gallon glass carboy is pretty cheap. If you do try this, even just recycling once saves you close to $6. But after recycling 3 times, you just saved yourself about $20.

M@, do you all-grain or just partial mash?

M@
06-24-2003, 11:25 AM
I'm a partial-mash brewer. I like the way my beers come out, so I don't see a good reason to goto full grain.

M@ :ducttape:

elwood
06-24-2003, 03:43 PM
The only reason to go full grain is that you have complete control over the end product of your beer. You don't have to depend on the quality of the extract you use. It's a trade-off. I like to formulate my own recipies, and using all grain allows me more freedom in this. However, it bumps up the brew time from 2.5 - 3 hours to about 6 hours (including cleanup). It's much more of a project, and moves brewing a little bit further from a hobby. I still do partial mashes, especially since I work full time and am in school full time, and I am a full time ladies man. Not enough time to brew!
