UCS Northeast Climate Change Report –

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has released Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast: A Report of the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment. The report is based on a two-year effort involving a team of scientists from across the country. Climate models were applied on a regional basis using high emissions and low emissions scenarios. The results predict changes in the regional climate in terms of average temperature, number of days with excessive heat, precipitation, frequency of drought, and sea level rise. The study projects under a high emissions scenario that by the end of the century winters could be 8 to 12 degrees F warmer and summers by 6 to 14 degrees F; Boston could experience 30 to 60 days of temperatures over 90 degrees each summer compared to the historical 10 to 15 days; cutting in half of the winter snow season; increased frequency of drought; sea level rise of between a few inches and more than 1 foot by mid-century and by 8 inches to 3 feet by the end; and increased risk of coastal flood damage from storm surges. The report also notes that if the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets collapse, the region would face a 20 foot rise in sea level over the next few centuries. UCS will issue an additional report in early 2007 on impacts to regional forests and agriculture, coastal and marine resources, human health, and urban areas.

Summers in New Hampshire could feel like summers in North Carolina today. Winters will have little snow, a lot of rain, and the snow that falls will be heavier and wetter. :(

how does studying two years of weather models, or studying weather models for two years, give you the ability to predict the future?

if you are really worried about this, read State of Fear - Micheal Chrichton

Yes, and in a tie in, the Petroleum geologists (don't we get our oil from dinosaurs?) just honored him for the new book. However, the American Quaternary Association wrote a rebuff that appeared in the newsletter of the american geophysical union:

BLADEGIRL - THANK FOR THE ARTICLE, these guys obviously know what they are talking about. But, after i read State of Fear I didn't know what to believe, I think Chrichton can convince anyone. Anyway, you can use statistics to prove anything.

Their long term predictions are questionable at best, so let's all hope they're dead wrong bout this. Like I said earlier - Wolf Creek Pass / Silverton, here I come.

Weak El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific and are expected to persist through the winter, possibly strengthening during the next few months to an event of moderate strength. However, this event is not expected to reach the magnitude of the very strong 1997-1998 El Niño event.

"The strengthening El Niño event will influence the position and strength of the jet stream over the Pacific Ocean, which in turn will affect winter precipitation and temperature patterns across the country," said Michael Halpert, lead forecaster at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. "This event is likely to result in fewer cold air outbreaks in the country than would be expected to occur in a typical non-El Niño winter."

The winter outlook reflects a blend of factors associated with weak to moderate strength El Niño events across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, combined with longer-term trends.

From December through February, the lower 48 states can expect about two percent fewer heating degree days than average but about five to 10 percent more heating degree days than last year's very warm winter. (A heating degree day is used as an indication of fuel consumption. One heating degree day is given for each degree that the daily mean temperature is below 65 degrees.)

Seasonal forecasters also expect warmer than average temperatures across the West, the Southwest, the Plains states, the Midwest, most of the Northeast, and the northern mid-Atlantic, as well as most of Alaska. Near-average temperatures are expected for parts of the Southeast, while below-average temperatures are anticipated for Hawaii. Maine, the southern mid-Atlantic, the Tennessee Valley, and much of Texas have equal chances of warmer, cooler and near-normal temperatures this winter.

The outlook for winter precipitation calls for wetter than average conditions across the Southwest from Southern California to Texas and for Florida and the south Atlantic Coast. Drier than average conditions are expected in the Tennessee Valley, the northern Rockies, the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. Other regions have equal chances of drier, wetter or near normal precipitation. The pattern of rainfall in the West is expected to improve drought conditions across Arizona and Texas, but result in drought across parts of Idaho, Washington and Oregon.

The NOAA Climate Prediction Center will update the U.S. Winter Weather Outlook on October 19 and again on November 16, 2006.
