Hi - this will be my third year at Tuckerman, and I have a question...
I keep seeing pictures of the GULF OF SLIDES. Where is this, and how do you get there? The most recent photos (April 6th) look AWESOME!!!

Hey I bet thats Irene! Wedding down is soooo soon huh!?
Gulf of slides is south of Tuckerman Ravine on the other side of Boots Spur (the long ridge to way over to the left of Tuckerman Ravine looking up. Boots spur is also the ridge that meets Hillman's Highway. Gulf of Slides is positioned like Tuckerman but just south. You can see it way over to the left of Tuckerman Ravine here (http://timefortuckerman.com/apr14-2001/panoramic/031_-_Panoramic_of_Mt_Washington_From_Wildcat.jpg) . Anyway at the trail head you take the Gulf of Slides trail instead of the Tuckerman Ravine trail to get there. Never been myself but its apparently a rougher route in and somewhat longer a hike. The bowl is more consistent in pitch than Tuckerman and a tad easily. Not much of a run out like Tuckerman either. Its no where near as popular as Tuckerman so often is only a few people at best.
I don't think the volunteer ski patrol patrols Gulf of Slides either so your pretty much on your own.

The Gulf of Slides is accessed from the Gulf of Slides Ski Trail. It should only be acsended via skiis(with skins) or snowshoes. Postholing is not forbidden, but definately frowned upon as it ruins the descent for skiiers.
It is a very remote area and does not draw the kind of traffic that Tuckermans does. You must be self reliant.
From everything I have read and heard the skiing up there should be great. If the Sherburn Trail is skiable to the bottom, as it is right know, it is likely the Gulf of Slides Trail will be as well.
The Trail can be accessed from Pinkham Notch Lodge. You'll have to ask, but I think it starts at the South end of the parking lot. Its about a three mile hike.
I am going up on the 20th if your interested. I am trying to find some people to go with.

Good Luck!
I can't think of a more beautiful place or time of year to be married. I hope the mountain spirits will be forever watching over you.

Irene, I am planning on being in there on the 27th, weather and a few other things in my life permitting. In other words - no guarantees. However if I am, and there are some songs that are special to you, that you would like played to echo down from about 3/4 of the way up lunch rocks during the ceremony, I would be glad to oblidge. If you would like quiet during the ceremony, no prob, it's your wedding, just let me know. You can contact me off-line at fred@trilogic.com /Saxman
