I went to the NYS state fair with the family yesterday and this place was handing out two free lift ticket vouchers. Being the ski **** that I am I grabbed some. Never heard of the place but I guess its not far from hunter, be good for a monday after a weekend at hunter. Anybody been there?

good for a monday after a weekend at hunter.
May be better to do weekend at Belleayre, then Monday at hunter due to crowds.
My bro used to live in Cooperstown and skied Belleayre a few times - never been meself. He said terrain is okay, but definitely doesn't have huntah's vert or steeps. He preferred nearby Plattekill - smaller, but similar vert, some decent steeps, nice glades, no crowds whatsoever, even on holidays. I skied there once and had a blast with my neice and nephews who are hard-core and not easily satisfied (their home mtn is Magic). We had 6" of pow and it lasted all day long on a saturday.

Bellayre is a great little mountain..

I personally find myself bored there pretty quickly.. It's built on a ridge - all trails pretty much parallel to each other - so each trail pretty much has a section of steep and then tons of mellower...

Cool vibe - nice folks...

I learned to ski there in '86. Had a blast, haven't been back since.

Ahhh, but there's nothing like the first time.....

Also worth noting, it is public: owned by New York State.

Which pisses off other local ski areas that don't get as much "help" from the state..
When the state allows Bellayre to get away with stuff - the owners of other areas in the Catskills rush up the nys thruway to Albany to complain...

Well, I don't see it as "help" exactly. The state is not helping a private entity. The state owns the land and all facilities and is acting as a business there. Conversely, state owned ski areas often have older equipment and facilities and are less developed because the goal is to offer a reasonably priced recreational opportunity, not to maximize profit. But I am just speaking generally, and also with Cannon in mind, the NH-owned ski mountain at which i used to work. I have not been to Belleayre (though I used to work for NYS) and don't know what sort of things they get away with that are forbidden at other resorts.

Right... But say Bellayre wants to expand.. Expansion is tough in the Catskills because it's a NYC watershed... Some claim Bellayre is allowed more and easier access to land then non-state resorts.. Which makes non-state areas waiting to expand mad...

Did I need to add the smiley... I kind of figured the sarcasm would be implied...

shoot, I practically grew up at Belleayre- between there and Jiminy Peak that is. Belleayre is a cool little place and I heard they've done a bunch of expanding since I last skied it. Last I remember it- It was something of the size of Ski Windham, Crotched or Cranmore. Free tickets are always cool- I hear there has been a huge tele revival at Belleayre... you know what lots of tele skiers mean- lots of tree skiing, lots of locally cut trails- just gotta find em! I want a full TR on my desk by Monday morning! :D

I bet you Brighton would pay you to put skis on- unfortunately labor laws aren't as up to date here. They make you choke, and they don't give you a snorkle! Can you believe these harsh working conditions?! It's a good thing you're not patrolling here- you'd hate it- besides it's much harder to knock down trees with your face here...

Yea skilasnow it's much easier to make a living at a resort out here! When are you moving?? You aren't going to miss this season are you?? It might snow up at Alta tonight so there is the possibility of power skiing TOMORROW! I hear it's not all that unusual. If it happen pics will fly!

Utah SUKCS!

He's right children- and let that be a lesson: Utah and everything closely associated with it is very bad, BAD! Utah, BAD! Powder, BAD! Stay out of Utah and stay out of the powder!
