View Full Version : It seems I need some new clincher rims...
...for my mid-'80s Grandis. It's Pro-Record equipped and could have been a concourse bike....but I liked racing it.
Anyway I'll run 25mm tires. Training weight, as it were. The old wheels are set up for TT for sew ups. I ran 220gm or 230gm tires on what were nice Chronos rims (32 spokes)...
so, after all that I'm looking for rims that will work well with my classic super-record brakes, be stylisticaly appropriate for my bike (metalflake orange with the period decals), not break the bank....oh, and take a pounding.
Any ideas??

ebay ebay ebay! There are some great deals on "Classic" stufff.....ive seen some good wheels there.
No clue as to old Campy brakes might differ wrt rims or what your fashion sense is, but these hand-built 32-spoke rims look like a good deal and they will certainly take a beating. As an added bonus, you can pick them up yourself and save shipping...

I have the hubs...gorgeous Pro-record hubs...just need the rims and some spokes.
But thanks for the link to Harris Cyclery...Sheldon may be disposed to steer me right...I've known him for 30 years.
The Mavics (in Black) took very nice.
I did some serious browsing there this weekend. It's time to turn my old Bianchi into more of a tourer (i.e., set it up with a triple and new freewheel, so I don't burn out trying to carry my youngster around with me here in hill country). I looked at upgrading the wheelset to something lighter than the old, indestructible 36-spoke stock wheels, but I figured I need to give up riding dirt roads before I make that switch. Someday, I'll throw some 32mm cross tires on these wheels and buy something fast for full-on pavement riding, but there's precious little in the way of cosistently smooth roads out this way, unless you actually enjoy cars regularly blowing by you at 50+ mph.
On that note, any thoughts on 32mm inverted tread tires? Will they hold up well on dirt road descents? (I currently take them rather slowly.) How much more rolling resistance should I expect over my 25c tires?
32 would not be my choice. 37mm or 42mm would be better for me at nearly 200 gross weight...as my 196lbs is pretty gross.
I prefer the Conti TopTouring 42 for my Hybrid..that's out of production but the have a nice trekking tyre that will do as well.
Inverted tread is excellent if skills/judement are good...but I raced Cross for years and am used to babying the tyres & wheels....broke a lot of frames and wheels learning it though...
If you have Campy Record hubs, you should just bring them to a good wheelbuilder and let him have at it. You'll probably still be out 2 bills, but it will be worth it. Peter White (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com), for example, guarantees his wheels for life, but I'd think you know who's who better than me. So, should I infer that you are just looking for nice, inexpnsive rims to build with yourself? If so, I'll keep an eye out, whilst I continue my long overdue bike upgrade.
...should I infer that you are just looking for nice, inexpnsive rims to build with yourself? ....In 14 years of competition cycling (as a total dirtbag) I twisted a few spokes...including some tied and soldered sets and the first pair of mono-fillament/epoxy tied wheels.
I like building wheels and will be doing these...and cheap wheels won't be going on my ride...nice wheels, but not exotic....Grey annodized Mavics (or something like) in the 50USD(each) range .

my 4 yr old would love that baby............too bad shes third in line her bikes are all had me downs(she doesn't know the dif anywho):cooldog:
I've run Mavic Reflex, Ambrosias, old Maxic GP4s...for road and cyclocross racing over the years and havent had an issue with any of them.
Check around ebay, you can score NOS mavic rims for pretty cheap. Same goes for FIR, campy, etc.
Any box section 32 hole wheel laced 3 cross will serve you just fine.

If you get a cross tire without a lot of centre tread but with some side tread like Specialized Borough CX then the rolling resistance is not too noticible. They hold the dirt roads fine especially in the corners with about 40 PSI. Even my mud CX tires with enough PSI roll fine but make lots of noise on pavement.
Depending on the bike, you may have a problem with tire clearance between the brake caliper or the frame in front of the back wheel.

I have a never used, never built up Wolber T430 Alpine 700C Clincher rim that you can have if you want. Its a nice, classic low profile rim. Unfortunately I only have one.
I could ship it to you.

I could ship it to you. Thanks, I am holding out for the right matched pair...before I raced this bike it was a concours ready beauty...it's glory may have been nicked a bit, but she gets nice rims. There were only two of the metal/orange Grandis in the USA that year, I got one and the other was West of the MrsHippy!
I still have to recover my road hubs...long story, but I have my TT hubs and I'll build them with straight 15g DT* SS, prolly 3x as I can do that in my sleep.
* I trained and raced on 14g as durability was a concern....being known as RobDestroy while an honor was annoyingly accurate.

HA! Reps!
Interesting that two of my most favorite ski buddies would have the word "destroy" in a nickname.
