View Full Version : Worst and coolest person you've shared a shelter with...
Coolest... This guy - I forget his name - Rich maybe... Had long red hair and played guitar.. Played a song called the Tuckerman Blues.. Was staying at the shelter for a few weeks. I really enjoyed hanging with this guy.. He skied a pair of Olen Mark 4s...
Worst - A family from the Phili area... The Mom went to bed around 6PM and woke up chattering around 5:AM... Sat in the shelter and smoke butts.. I almost kicked her ass...
Kewl = 5/4/01 Shared lean to with a guy named Dave: He sells frisbees for a living. Turns out, I bought a box of mini-frisbees for our wedding from him in 1998. Small world. I had a 150g disc with me, and he had a kewl disc that had LEDs on the side and spelled messages. As I was packed up and leaving I said, "Wanna trade frisbees?" and he didn't even blink, just said, "Yup" And now I have a very kewl frisbee with good memories attached.
Worst = My best friend Chris who snores like you wouldn't believe. Still my best friend, but man can he snore. First time in lean to I slept right next to him, mistake. Next time I made sure there were like 4 people between us and it wasn't as bad.

Only time I've stayed in a lean-to was maybe back in early june of 97 or 98.....
It was mid-week, so me and my bro thought we were all set with the LT to ourselves then just before dark 3-4 folks from quebec (assuming cuz all the were speaking was french)...not a big deal, everyone was in their bags chillin and talking quietly etc..but with 3-4 short stubby open wax candles..and then going to sleep with the candles still burning....
...all we could imagine was someones bag/gear/whatever catching in the middle of the night....
nevertheless got to wake up and play in the snow the next morning...

elwood and i had a great time at cabin 6! we had some young hellyins at our sight that were doing backflips and rodeos all day on a hit that the built and vidio taped! short plankers, skiboarders! but we got hammered and it was great because on of the kids had never been camping! could you imagine the first time you go camping it is at :tucks: :D that is crazy! but it was spiritual because the kid had never seen stars like on that night, open clear and vast! right on!!!
the worst was not in the leantoos but in :pinkham: parkinglot with my uncle. he has the worst BO ever and we slept in the cab of his truck, mad stink! :envy: :outhouse:

Best was the 3 Canadian National downhill team guys in 1970 - totally crazy, with a great stash of moonshine that they had no qualms about sharing with us under-aged punks.
The worst was when my buddy ate something that gave him continuous gas the whole nite - I almost had to leave the shelter and sleep out in the snow it was so rank!
My worst experience was sharing a lean-to with a guy who snored on inhalation . . . and exhalation. Double-barreled torture. Even worse was having to listen to him in the morning brag about how well he slept.

Best trip had to be on Mt. Chocorua, at the Jim Liberty cabin....we met up with these three dudes from rochester,nh area on Thanksgiving weekend. This was back in early eighties...My uncle Clarence partied with these guys all night...tequila/whiskey/...he tried out their pipe too! ....Waaaaysted!!! Got a priceless photo of him in the mornin'!!!

Best had to be sharing the Galehead shelter with a guy who was preparing to climb Aconcagua. To simulate the weight of an expedition pack, he had all kinds of random stuff with him, including a huge stock pot with all the goodies, some fine scotch, and even a humidor!
No worst experiences driven by people; I've never not had an enjoyable time sharing shelter with others. Have had some pretty ugly situations with cold, comfort, and rodents, but the people have always been great!
Sadly the ski year is done for me, but I'm off tomorrow to the Whites anyway. Only two more hikes to go to finish my 48 4000'ers!

Well, it wasn't a shelter in the mountains...it was at a state camp ground in San Elijo, CA. In 1984, my girlfriend (now my wife)and I took a surf trip to CA and stayed at this camp ground. For individuals who were passing through, there was a site that they could share with other transients which happened to be right next to ours which we reserved for the week. A young man from Germany (Uve)was staying there and a local transient sets up camp for the night. Well, they were up all night on the booze and the pipe. Next morning, the Uve is trying to sleep it off. While the transient is burning his breakfast on the camp fire (literally burned a hole in a pot), he is trying to wake up Uve by singing a drunken rendition of "Good Morning America, you m-f'er" (a real quote). Well, we feel sorry for Uve, and invite him to pitch camp at our site, a good move as he just flew in from Hawaii with a batch of MauiWowee.
Seems like theres a few of us on the board that enjoy a little break at 4:20...

DMC-
Absolutely! And to second your post from another topic, WE ARE EVERYWHERE!
Jerry still lives - at my house!...
I'm a 50+ GD show vet... I'm really into Phil and Phriends.. But not to big into "Rat Dog" or "The Other Ones"...
I wasnt going to go see "The Dead" this summer... But I kinda got talked into it... I think I'm psyched... Spend the day in Phili and go see them at Camden...
Phish Head here: ~20shows.
3 dead shows
2 Floyd Shows under the belt to. I want them to tour so bad.
And to add some to the music thread: In my opinion, the only music in the ravine should be live. Some guys brought a radio one year, and we told them to leave it off. I was digging into my back pack one year and said to my friend, "How about a little music!" and he thought i was gonna pull out a radio... he was like, "I dunno, doesn't seem right" but instead I pulled out my recorder and a good time was had by all.

Nice DMC.
I've seen 14 GD shows, loved every one. Even saw the last 2 GD shows ever. Phil and Friends I have seen a couple of times, and enjoyed both of those shows. I am going to try out this new fangled "The Dead" at Hartford this summer. I have heard good things about them, so should be a fun time!
M@, I have seen +50 Phish shows. Love 'em. Only catching the "It" festival this summer, can't do any travelling. I did catch 3 shows on the Feb. tour though. Denver, Worcester, and Nassau Col.
Can't wait for It!
elwood - See you at IT!!!!!
WOOO HOOOO!!!
I used to see Phish a ton but lately I just cant get into it... I gotta wait for all the new kids to settle into the whole phlow...
But I am totally stoked for Limestone!!! I've seen both previous shows there... Unbelievable time!!!!
We will have to hook up!!!
We "Went", but can't go to "It."
Excuse = kids. More important to spend time with them. Caught Trey at Memorial last year, great show. I was having some magic Hat during the third set, we were the only 3 people in the beer area in the basement, and Page came out and we kicked back a few with him, talked about kids mostly. That's my only taste of Phame.

DMC, they are supposed to be extending cell phone coverage for Limestone during the festival, so hopefully we will be able to call out... Otherwise I am looking into getting some sort of unique flag to fly above the campsite to identify us. We sould definitely coordinate something so we can meet up when we are there. Should have some of the nice VT green with us... :D
I am hoping that one of those sets, they will bust out a TMWSIY

M@,
I was also at that Trey show. Kicked A$$. I just saw the two shows he did there last week as well. That band keeps getting better and better everytime I see them. And to keep this post on topic, they would sound awesome at Tux!

I've seen a few Dead shows as well... got talked into repainting my VeeWee camper with a purple dancing bear on the roof and following their East Coast tour in .... '89... '90... ? ... I think it was '89. I only had tickets to 3 of the shows and one of them, Bufallo, I left after the opening band cuz they were who I really wanted to see... caught a lot of **** for that, but loved the show in Wisconsin, great beer gardens.
BIG :beermug: 's , very big :beermug: 's
