I was wondering what the conditions are like especially the headwall. My first time was at 1996 and it was insane. you can take a look at my picture of it at this link

Welcome Chris. Lots of recent photos (and videos) are available on the site. See top of the main message board page and the home page.
This year is about on average with others. I'm sure there will be great skiing through mid to late May. Maybe the center headwall isn't skiable, but there are lots of other popular routes including Left Gully, The Chute, Right Gully and Hillmans.
Even Memorial Day weekend has been do-able in the ravine all the years I have been there. Mind you by the end of May some routes are a bit dicey, and a helmet is more than mandatory.
What date were you there in 2001?

Didnt want to start a new thread...but i have a question...
Hi all,
Have only been to Tucks twice - both X in 97? But am contemplateing heading up in the next few weeks..
Need to work out some details....how long is the hike from the Notch to Hermit Lake (at a fairly steady brisk pace)?? If my (albiet fuzzy) memory serves me - I remember about 2 hours up??
Thanks in advance...!!!!!

Welcome pepperdawg,
This and related topics are well covered on the Trail and Area Map for Tuckerman Ravine and Pinkham Notch (http://timefortuckerman.com/tuckermanravinemap.html).
As far as hiking at a brisk pace is concerned, about 1.5 hrs Pinkham to HoJo's. 30 min from HoJo's to the ravine floor.

We skied this past Friday, Apr 25. The conditions were great. After 9" of new snow, the headwall had some nice lines, especially in the center gulley portion, just left of the icefall and to the right of the chute. Three brave souls skied the icefall with the final boarder catching big air off one of the rocks. A lot of people were skiing the Lip, but there were crevasses hidden there under the new snow (no thanks for me). The upper snowfields' conditions were excellent. Have a great trip.

I was up there for march 29th and 30th (at least I THINK those were the right dates), and conditions were bizzare to say the least.
On that saturday it POURED felines and canines, to the point where I was gritting my bicuspids, but the left gully was a lot of fun.
On saturday night it all froze and started snowing. Sunday was frightening dust on crust It's a good thing I'm used to skiing at Cannon Mountain, otherwise I'd never have survived. I saw a young couple on snowboards have back to back slides for life down the Chute, with the girl nearly smacking the left wall a couple of times. They both fell right at the top. SCary stuff.
I'll be there on 5/3 as well, in a party with a middle-aged pony-tailed man, and a short, cute redhead with a sled. :D
hey CainamLlisrettim I was there...in the party closest to the landing spot of the first of the two falling girls...btw, the first one was awfull to watch, but I think the second one was more or less using a controlled slide.
See ya on the 3rd!

I was up there yesterday (monday), conditions were great. I skied the center headwall and it was in good condition, except for 1 area of undermined snow. My friend took a line skiers right of Icefall yesterday and said that was in marginal condition. Sluice was good too except for the ever looming danger of ice...
The lip looked to be in poor condition
