I'm wondering how many other women belong to the TR messageboard. I'd be interested in hearing their perspectives on the ravine experience. :skicool:

I have the strong impression that you are VERY outnumbered genderly :( Very Sad... But I can say that plenty of women DO ski at Tucks, but women in general probably realize that there are far better things to be doing than hang out here :D

Maybe it's just that more men than women have access to high speed computers at work.

No... I'd say just more men are NOT really working, and instead are surfing the net instead.
We could ask for gender when members sign up... that might answer your question. Might be that more women are lurking than posting. Does this mean men communicate better? Oh my!

Must be a delay built in or something to discourage "rapid posting" or something. Dave: Am I right? Al

Hey momster,
Just click on the "IMAGE' button under 'Instant UBB Code' which is just to the right of the Instant Graemlins. Then enter the complete URL of your image.
Cheers!
Hi Skimom! I'm a woman T4Ter and I'm also a mother!
I went to TR this year for the very first time. In fact it was my very first backcountry snowboard experience. And I must say it was incredible. Pictures don't do this place justice! I personally only hiked up the bowl about 1/4 the way. I made the mistake of hiking up early morning when the snow was bulletproof. Won't make that mistake next year. All in all a great trip and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year.

LJ Hi LJ:
Cool. Did you use crampons? Would you recommend them? Can't find any at a decent price, and I'm not sure its worth paying a ton of money for them this late in the season.
If it is that steep, how do you get your snowboard on partway up?
Also, what limited you? Fatigue, ice, the steepness, snow quality, or the "freak factor" in general?
The Skidude and I are targeting next weekend to hike up - can't wait to try it. :D
Hi Skimom,
Hmmm... you got me thinking.
First off I did not use crampons. I think if I was to go any further I would have needed them.
I think what stopped me from going any further was a number of things. First, for me, I thought it was very deceiving on the hike up. I thought it wasn't that steep but when you turn around and look I was like "wow, how did that happen!" As far as getting my board on, my husband was kneeling in front of me while I straped in. I'm sure this wasn't the correct way, but it worked for me. What freaked me out the most was that my husband started desending first. He had a really hard time and fell a few times. Now my husband is an excellent snowboarder/skier (been skiing since he was a kid) so to see him have a hard time really bummed me out. So I think I was beat before I started. Then the snow was really hard so it was tough for me to make turns. I think I would qualify my ability as intermediate trying to go advanced.
It was just a huge experience for me. I think the biggest thing I learned was about how to keep warm. I thought I had the right combo of cotton-free clothes but I was still extremely warm on the hike up. I had to keep taking stuff off and putting stuff on (which slowed the hike down). This is crucial. I think when we started it was 40 degrees but at the base of the ravine it was low teens and windy. You don't want to be sweating when you get there. Will definitely change a few things next year.
Well I hope you guys have a great day, and enjoy every bit of it. I remember thinking half way up the trail thinking "I'm never gonna make it" but adrenline got me there and I'm glad it did.
Feel free to ask me anything else. I hope this helps!

Any tips from other people about how to get into skis partway up?

this is how put on the boards half way up:
assuming the snow is soft as it should be this time of year.
I step to the side of the boot pack path then proceed to mash the snow in fron of me until i have somewhat of a level pocket to stand on with my inside foot. then i stick the tail and front of my ski into the snow so that the middle kind of hangs in midair-- this keeps the snow out of hte binding. then i pop in my downhill ski and the uphill one is easy from there.
Sorry about the bad instructions!!
I tried!
