I'm planning on heading up to tuck's either this weekend or next. In the past, I've either stayed in a motel in Conway or slept in my car. Are there any campsites that are actually open this time of the year so I can pitch a tent? I'm looking to save some money by skipping the Motel, but gain some comfort by staying out of my car.

Barnes Field, near Dolly Copp, is open year round.

There are several tent platforms at Hermit Lake. The convenience to Tux is remarkable.

If you don't have the energy or are just plain too lazy to schlep your tent and gear up, I would recommend Barnes Fields. To get there, just keep driving north on 16 past Pinkham Lodge and the past the autoroud and it'll be on the left. Once you're on that road keep going straight past the Dolly Copp entrance and follow the signs.

Enjoy! And watch out for Montreallers stealing your fire in the middle of the night.

Thanks for the help! I would love to stay up at Hermit Lake, but I doubt I would be able to get a platform arriving around 10pm on a Friday night. I suppose if I took Friday off work and got up Thursday night that would be a possibility.

Thursday night is almost guarenteed tent/lean to spot, and I wouldn't count out friday night. Pinkham (where you register at the trail head) is open until 11pm, and if you show up later you can hike up and find a spot and register in the morning up there. My expierence is they sell out early sat. morning if they sell out at all. So my advice is plan to camp up top - but goto Barnes fields if you can't. Lots of fun to be had in both places.

I dunno if you really want to tent camp, but sleeping in the lean-tos saves the weight of the tent... although the tent is much more private.
