I don't know if anyone has experienced this before or not...

I spent yesterday up in the ravine trying to learn to tele ski on the steeps. I found myself gasping a little harder than usual as I got to the top of Lobster Claw for my last run of the day. Afterwards, on the way to Flatbread, all 5 of us started to notice that it hurt to breathe.

I threw out the idea that it was because of the ozone level. No one had heard of this effect, and I wasn't entirely sure what it meant, I'd just heard it on the weather before. So at EMS I checked the weather kiosk, and sure enough the ozone level was Moderate (yellow).

Getting home last night I googled the whole ozone thing, and learned a bit about it. Turns out the effect of low level ozone is similar to that of a sunburn on your lungs. Damn. I'm glad I'm not asthmatic. It literally hurt to take a full breath, and doing so would get you coughing like the day after you'd had too many bong hits :D

Has anyone ever experienced this at Tucks? I know it gets more publicity in the summer months, but I'm not sure if that's because the effect is stronger in summer or because there's more people who might be affected by it. Anyone know anything about this?

Holy crap. Me and my dad had the same exact thing. First time it ever happen to either of use hiking. Weird

Also you guys were sitting right below me on lunch rocks. I heard you talking about how you can never get sick of flatbread for like 20 minutes. So where is this flatbread place...

That's hilarious (the flatbread talk, not the ozone). Sometimes we get carried away. It's in the same hotel building as EMS, the Eastern Slope Inn. Big white building just beyond the first traffic light as you come into N.Conway from the North. You won't regret it.
