My coworker had a bad ski accident this morning in Windham NY, & is now being rushed into emergency surgery. He hit a tree & crushed his helmet. There is bleeding on the brain, the doctors were going to induce a coma, but something must have happened. Please send good thoughts his way.

Thanks you guys. Your support is helping. We just got an update: J.S. is out of surgery, the doctors relieved the pressure on his brain. He is intubated, so I assume back into a drug - induced coma (?). Now they wait to see if the pressure builds back up. There is a high chance of *some* brain damage, but at this point it's pure speculation as to the extent.
Thanks for letting me vent here, it's just been eating away at me today. Apparantly he was skiing hard & fast (as always), somehow caught an edge & rammed into a nearby tree. What's ironic is he usually doesn't wear a helmet, & another coworker recently gave him one to keep, one he aquired free within the industry... So at least now he has a chance to fight this.
peace,
ski&ride
let's hope his luck holds and he recovers soon!

Great that there was a helmet, hopefully he makes a full recovery and there isn't too much damage, if any.
I hope he is ok.

Lots of positive energy for J.S. as well as friends and family.
Likely that he would be breathing spontaneously and that the induced coma is to allow the ventilator to help control pressure on the brain (Intracranial pressure). Because of the induced coma (and possibly induced paralysis), it's difficult to assess any neurological function. I'm certain this is a very difficult time for all that know him. My heart is out to all involved.
From your description, he sounds like a man of strong spirit, which is great news. A strong will creates more miracles than modern medicine ever could.

Sled, you're right, both about the induced coma to control pressure, & the fact Jason has a great spirit. He's one of the friendliest, upbeat, happy, optimistic guys I've met. I know he can get through whatever roads lie ahead. I really believe everyone's support here played a part during his critical time. Here's the latest report, looks like time will now be the healer. Thanks again, all. And also to the ski patrollers whose quick actions saved his life!
John E. called this morning to let us know that Jason’s parents say the doctors are now using phrases like ”cautiously optimistic” regarding his prognosis. He is stable and will remain in the induced coma over the weekend, then they will slowly revive him and they’ll have a better understanding of the extent of the damage. What they do say is that he is a very lucky man, and the odds are much better today than they were on Wednesday. He is most likely going to have a long road ahead of him, and no one can say for sure what, if any, permanent damage there will be, but we need to be optimistic that with his strength and positive attitude, and our thoughts and prayers, that we can have our Jason back soon.
The goal, as soon as he is able, is to move him to a hospital closer to home. John said huge cheers need to go out to the crew at Windham Mountain for getting him down the mountain and seeing that he got to the trauma center as quickly as he did – it saved his life. And kudos also to Shaun Hickman for getting Jay into a helmet, he’s a hero as well.
Sounds like this dood is pretty kewl - so much so that I overheard a guy at work talking about "Her son was skiing in NY and hit a tree..." and asked him about it, and it turns out to be the same guy. His description made me wish he was a friend of mine, super friendly etc... something about sharing an apartment one summer with 5 girls from Brazil.
Still got the karma focused on him.

A friend was down from Calgary end of the week and yesterday. We hiked up to Fourth Finger. At the end of the hike I told him about this thread and I asked him to join me in dedicating the run to J.S.
Best of wishes sent your way.

My total thoughts and prayers are with Jason. I don't reply or post here much, but my 7 year old daughter caught a tree last year and was "out" for about an hour. Scary like you don't know. She is fine, and I hope Jason turns out fine too. My heart goes out for you, him, and his loved ones. I had plenty of support for my beautiful one, and i just want to send the same to you. Peace all :)

Jason continues to improve... they have now moved him to another floor. The drain installed yesterday has been removed and the doctors are pleased with the progress from that drain. They have also installed some sort of mesh filters in his groin area to prevent blood clots from traveling to the heart... this is strictly precautionary as Jason has not developed any blood clots. However, as we all know, sitting or lying in one position for an extended period of time can result in blood clots for otherwise healthy people.
They also did a procedure to draw some spinal fluid to confirm that there is no infection in Jason's brain, which they would have had to treat with a different type of antibiotic. Anyway, the doctors were not concerned about the results from that procedure either.
Jason's coma has been described as a "light coma", which doesn't surprise me at all, based on the way he was/is reacting to many different kinds of stimulus.
This was the last update on Tuesday. It sounds like Jason is doing pretty well. I hope to hear more good news as time goes on. Still keeping him in my thoughts, and still sending out healing vibes.
A friend of mine sent this hebrew prayer to me just yesterday, because a very good mutual friend of ours passed away last weekend:
Mi she-bei-rach a-vo-tei nu. M'kor ha-bra-cha l'I-mo-tei-nu
May the the source of strength who blessed the ones before us
Help us find the courage to make our life a blessing. And let us say, Amen.
Mi she-bei-rach I-mo-tei-nu. M'kor ha-bra-cha L'a-vo-tei-nu
Bless those in need of healing with r'fu-a sh'lei-ma
The renewal of body. The renewal of spirit. And let us say Amen

Wow, it really is a small world. We were all totally shocked & numb when we got the news. I know there's no easy way to find out about these things. As you know Jay is a great guy with a huge positive spirit, so if anyone can fight through this, it's Shreck. I check his progress online every day, & the news keeps improving. We're all keeping hopes up.

I went to visit Jason Monday evening, he's been tranferred to Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Boston. It was great to see him & TALK with him for 2 hours! He is doing well, eating on his own, still needs assistance getting out of bed / walking, but doing 5-6 hours of therapy a day. No surprise to me, he is already 1.5 months ahead of schedule, & should be discharged by late May! He'll move back with his folks & continue outpatient therapy. Once all the swelling is down, he'll return to Windham Hospital to put back the part of his skull they needed to remove. Much to his mother's chagrin, he can't wait to get back on the slopes! :) He's definitely chosen to stay with us, & is returning back to his normal self. Go Jason!
The chain of events that immediately followed his accident were more than just coincidences. It's too much to explain at the moment, but I'll be glad to share his story of survival with anyone interested. The rescuers + surgeons saved his life with just 3 min to spare...

awesome news!
The other question is how have you been through all of this? It must have been pretty trying for you. Often we get so caught up in the events and all the crazyness that goes with it to realize what an effect it had on us. I think we push things down into ourselves becuase he we are alive and well not going through this physically. It is easy to forget sometimes just what a heavy mental and emotional toll these type of things can have on us. It helps to take a look inside ourselves in situations like this so as not to get to overwhlemed and have a physical/mental/ emotional overload sneak up on us down the road. I am sure the new bike will help emmensly! ;)
Glad things are working out and he is doing so well.
Moving as a friend to all through difficult times....Respect!
