Too bad I finish my final tests on dec 16. What is skiable, in december ??? If Sherburne / Little Headwall are not cleared (are they ?) during fall, they shouldn't be skiable, and for the bowl, I guess it needs much more snow to be skiable....
Full moon on Dec 8th.
Geminids on the 14th.
Excellent.
I'm in. 90%

Nice avatar, DMC. Excuse my ignorance, but what mountain is in the distance? :snowboardstyle: Mumster thats the flip side of Tucks, west side of Mt Washington. Easy even on a small pix like that since the cog line is clearly visible. Next time you go be sure to drive down the 302 through Crawford notch. Great view of the western slopes of Mt. Washington.

I'm definately in for the day. With a fullmoon only a few days prior a night hike would be cool if the skies are clear Friday night.

Glad to see there is so much interest in going in December. Who's up for staying in the shelters?

I'd definitely be interested in heading up in December, although I can't tell for sure if I'm clear then. What's skiable that early in the season most years though?

Looks pretty freaking skiable...
Avi danger probably pretty high then...
I can get a coupple extra trancievers and probes... But we'd have to spend some time learning before we did anything...
Cause if go under I want you guys to dig me out...
We will definatley avoid wherever the rangers tell us not to go...

I december trip to tucks just to practice avy skills would be great. I could ask a N. Conway guide to join us. But if the conditions are right, some turns would be awesome.
You can NEVER have enough practice...

Wow, that does look nice! I have a metal avy shovel, but no probe or reciever, and unfourtanetly know next to nothing about avalanches...
edit to add: But I'd still love to go, unless you don't want me to hold you back/get in the way or whatever (which is ok)

get the book "snow sense", its cheap and has some great info.

DMC: Where can you get the extra equip?
I have never used a transciever or probe as I generally only go up to the safezones in early winter.
I have been wanting to learn for awhile. Would you mind showing a relative newby the ropes?

I am definitly Soooooooooo down with a Dec trip...
:)
.I have a Pieps 457..but have no real experience using it...(I wear it when I'm out west on sketchy in-bounds terrain)...So I would be super appreciative/stoked to learn proper technique from masters.......
:D
I will need to pick a probe....
I've lean-to-ed with guys who took a class, but I forget how long it was. Would it be a weekend thing? I'd sign up for a class, hike up, learn the tools and tricks. Self arrest would be a skill I'd like to add as well.
You can rent them...
But I just borrow them from friends... We have a "no problemo" borrow policy on tranceivers... Anybody I know that wants to borrow it and knows how to use it can take it - just as long as i dont need it...
I can walk you through the whole tranceiver thing - it's pretty easy to use. Basically points in the direction of the victim and gives distance in meters.. Just have to teach about the flux lines - which isnt such a big deal.
this is assuming you use a transceiver like an Alpine Tracker and not a Pieps...
The other stuff like snow layer testing is tougher.. Get Snow Sense as someone posted...

I took a weekend class last year with Chauvin guides. It goes through all of the basics. I would definetly recommend reading snow sense.

I would definitely be interested in some skills training as well, I have very little avi skills... How much would it cost us to hire a guide for this excursion??
If we have enough people not very much at all...
I think we could get a good group going..
I need to take my level II this winter at some point - But I'd be down with a refresher with the gang... Just for hsits and giggles...
The ChauvinGuides website has lots of details.
http://www.chauvinguides.com/iceprograms.htm#Avy%201.
Summary: Avi Level 1 = $175

I'm absolutely looking to head up in Dec. Maybe we can skin together. Let's watch the reports.
The S. trail usually has enough snow to get at least 3/4 down at that time of year. Just look out for rocks and stuff.
The wall may, or may not be do-able. It depends on the snowbase (to cover the rocks), the visiblity and the avy level. The lower waterfall is usally visible in some areas with thin ice covering it. And you never know any of that until you get up there. But even on the worst of days, its still great to be up there taking in the views, or lack of views :)
The courses that are offered are great. I took level II last year and would love to get some guys together to take level III (maybe mid-winter)
For you guys that have never been there in early season, don't take the avy training or the weather lightly. If's F'in cold sometimes and these past years have had some bad results. Listen to the rangers. I always carry two transcievers so the other smuck that I'm with can dig my A out.
I'll probably bring 2 or 3 trancievers as well...
And extra wool underwear :)
I still have to take level II... Hope to get it this year...
Psyched to hook up with you... You going to be splitboarding right?

Hey NJB,
Did you get up to the Gulf of slides again this spring? I missed it this year.
Some of my Tele friends went up in March...

I made it up there for a couple of days. I really enjoyed it. NOBODY was there both times. Skiing those decently pitched gullies in solitude is awesome. I camped overnight on one of those trips. I would highly recommend it.

I've never been to GOS in mid winter. Mostly because it does what it is called at that time.
I will bring my split. And I'll skin in soft, fresh snow. But if the hiking trail is lightly covered or well backed, I'd rather carry my frontier. It's just as fast walking and the ride down is 3 times better.
Funny thing: last year in Jan I went up with my bud. The hiking trail was well backed. So, we walked and carried our boards. Then we saw that above HO's they had some incredible wind drifts from the previeous two days- All the way into the bowl (3-4' drifts). It took us about 1 1/2 hours (post holing all the way) to get to the bowl. I should have skinned :) BTW - That day had the best conditions I'v e ever experienced in the bowl. All Pow. But we were so tired, we only did one run. Plus it was getting late.
one more thing: As I have learned from last year, skinning the lower waterfall with a split (even with cramp-ons) is a big mistake. Walk around.
