View Full Version : This Weekend
Just wanted to get some feedback on the trail getting up to the ravine. Is the trail clear enough to hike or do you need snow shoes/skins? Also, any feedback on conditions would be helpful.
Thanks
Saturday there was still plenty of snow on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Being a bit warm, the corn-snow was soft. Boots were adequet, poles helpful. Sunday it was colder and the snow firmed up a lot, YakTrax were seen to be usefull, crampons would have helped, but were not needed. Poles required for steady progress in the steeper places.
If you are skiing down to Pinkham, there's nothing left of the Little Headwall skiing, but if one can reach the fan below the Duke, there's good access to the Shreborne Trail, via the Hillman runnout. Sherborne has a long bare patch midway, skirt left on good cover. Next to last pitch all bare after this bit of snow melts off.
The avy danger could be high today, but the base is well consilodated and front pointing up right gully seems the favored path for hikers aiming for the summit.
Unless there's a lot of fresh snow and no melting, snowshes won't be needed. Hiking crampons with front points would be very usefull. If I was hiking to the summit I'd be using poles most of the time, but my long axe in the ravine.
