I am planning a trip in 04 to Tucks, I am thinking about going april or may. Which time is better? I want to ski the headwall and some upper snowfields. Any advice would be great.
If you wish you can email me the advice too

If you can put up with the colder temps I'd pick the end of April. I usually ski it the weekend before Easter and had blue bird days three out 4 trips. And, I skied out right to the car - It doesn't get better than that.

Really depends on the snow year...
I've ridden the Upper Snowfields in mid-May before and have seen them completely gone at that same timeframe as well...
You should wait until after the new year to try and decide... Or just say F it.. and go anyways...

"...go anyways..."

That's the best advice. I'm kinda partial to taking a look fron Ho-Jo's and if the weather's too nasty, catch a run back down to Pinkham and drive right back to Cannon where steep is a place not an adjective!

the earlier you go, the easier it is to get down, which is a big plus. but it is much colder and requires a bit more attention to detail. i would suggest an april day trip, and may overnighter!!! it is a real expieriance to do the weekend thing, but does require a bit more gear :unhappyhiker: and room for :beer: ripper @ cabin 6!!

For a real hard core experience you could go for over nighter in January. I did this last year and it was incredible. I was the only one staying in the shelter, except for my friend whom I convinced to come. Luckly he did need much convincing.

We were lucky to catch a mild night only down around 20 degrees. We woke up to some fresh snow so siiing in the bowl was out, but we had a great run down the Sherburn.

I hope to be able to make up once in Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, April, May, and even June. Every year I start with that goal in mind. I'll actually probally only make it up two or three times.

God - I need a snow fix bad.

I've got two dates picked for overnighters next year;
April 10th = Cold, but can ski back to car. Just the skier people coming on this one.

May 1st = Not so cold, but hike from hojo home. The non-skier folks come on this one as it's bearable to just hang out on the rocks.
