View Full Version : Tux now!
Hi, this is my first post after lurking for a while. I was wondering if anyone reading the board would be willing to go up to Tux with me in the next week or so on a less severe warning day. Maybe just do some poking and probing who knows how far up. Then slide down. All my friends are either too busy or too timid. I've done plenty of backcountry before from A-basin to my backyard favorite BigJay. I'm an EMT/WEMT from Solo and do some patrol work at Jay Peak, so I'm pretty safety conscious as well. But the big thing is, I've been getting the Tux itch for a long time now and I need to scratch it. Everyone says don't do it alone, so what's y'all think?
Are you thinking of a mid day trip? I might be up for that next week - like 19% chance right now. Are you skinning up? I don't have skins.

skinning up?
M@
i've got skins, crampons and an ax. I'll probably pick up a probe before I go. I don't have a belay rope, carabiners, a transceiver or a shovel
I'll bootpack it with you if you decide to go. That's no problem. But aren't you concerned about traction? Or do you have crampons?

Like I said, I wouldn't count on me being able to go.
I have crampons, but have only used them once up in the ravine.
Where I am WOEFULLY deficent is in the Avy gear department. I've got no training and no stuff, so I am a ZERO probability kinda guy - which isn't much good for you as far as looking for an avy buddy.

the only interest I have in avies is avoiding them. But I would like to go up as far as possible and check it out.
hey, thanks for responding, let me know when you get up a few % points.
Has anyone on the board gone in there alone?

I would definately be interested in joining up with you, however, next weekend is a wash. It's a training weekend for me (reserves).
As far as equipment goes, I have 3 pair of skins, a few ropes, carabiners, belay devices, axes, crampons, shovel, probe, transceiver...etc. Also have a decent amount of training.

The next few weeks, I have a lot of mid-week days off, so I'd be game. At this stage, It generally means the Sure-Burn or GOS trail and see if conditions are safe higher up.
I have a "few" trips under my belt and do have an extra beacon and shovel. I'm always looking for safety concious partners.
This Friday or the tail end of next week are good.

Has anyone on the board gone in there alone? I've done the ravine well over 50+ times and I've been up several times solo (roughly 15 or so), but ALWAYS advise the rangers at the Hermit Lake Shelter that I am solo and give them my plan. The plan sometimes changes due to what they have to say about conditions, etc. DO take their advice and suggestions, even if it's a recommendation not to go into the ravine. They're enthusiastic about others enjoying the ravine and take your safety seriously. Like them, I would not want to have to search for you and haul you out.
If you're avy savvy, you'ld be checking the avy report regularly posted by the USDA Forest Service in the White Mountain National Forest. Chris usually does the reports and does a good job. If you don't know yet, the link is the top selection in the QUICK LINKS pull down menu on the menu bar at the top o this screen.
I may entertain the idea of going up soon but having been away from work for awhile and it is catching up to me.
Heading up to the Hermit Lake Shelters/HoJo's is fairly easy and skinning up the Tuckerman trail is by far the easiest means to get their. Once you're up there, it's a different game. Hoofing it is easy as well. So if any advice would be taken here.... seek out the ranger(s) and get their take on the conditions, even if you have go knock on their door.... that's what they are there for.

I've just turned into lifelong convert to this board.
This Friday or the tail end of next week are good.
Sounds good. Let's plan for Friday. Okay? Where do you want to meet?
Hey 172Recon, how about the weekend after that? I'm usually free from Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Sometimes Sunday instead of Saturday.
Thanks for the advice, PWDR8S. Is there a calendar on this board somewhere where we can put date rosters up?

Calendar? Yup..... It's the pull down menu Roll Call .....most of us are pretty good about posting when we plan to be up there and it's fun to meet up with fellow T4T'rs on the trail. If you see anyone listed on any particular date you plan on being there, PM them to coordinate plans.

Saturday or Sunday usually works for me. I work M-F and normally ride up Friday night. Since it's a long drive for me to just about anywhere in New England that is worth skiing/riding, it dosent matter where we go. I'm open to anywhere in the Presis (Tucks, GOS, Oaks, GG), Whites, Mansfield, Marcy, whatever. The weekend after next sounds good. The only other weekend, in addition to this one coming, that I am unavailable is the last weekend in January (going to see Elmo's Coloring Book with my 2-year old at the Providence Performing Arts). After that, I think the only show involving Elmo that i'll want to see is Elmo Goes Over the Lip in August.
