Looking for input on something here:

One of our MANY hobbies is geocaching. It's basicaly treasure hunting, similar to something called letter boxing. The website explains it all: http://www.geocaching.com

Basically: You post the co-ordinates for a box of cheap little toys. You go find it, and take a toy and leave a toy. Most of them have a disposable camera to take a picture.

We've hidden one treasure ourselves, and found about 14.

Here's two caches we found this weekend
#1 Virtual Cache (No treasure, just take a picture to prove you made it) (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cachelog_details.asp?ID=306975&L=1989220)
#2 Regular Cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cachelog_details.asp?ID=306990&L=1986740)

I'm thinking Tuckerman would be an EXCELLENT spot to hide one of these. So I'm looking for ideas from those of you whome have been there. I need an out of the way spot, where the GeoCachers could find the treasure. It should be off a trail so it is not discovered accidentaly, but not such that getting to it would damage delicate plantlife or anything like that.

Some caches involve finding seveal different co-ordinates or find a sign and using clues on the sign to generate the co-ordinates of the final treasure.

So what do you folks think would be kewl? A virtual cache, like "Take your Picture with the ravine in the backround and your GPS in your hand" or a traditional cache with a box hidden somewhere ,like "20 paces behind the First Aid Box at the base of Hillman's." Or something like, "In the Hojo cabin is a list of people who died in the area, take the 10th person's age and the 15th persons age and use them to calculate the final position...."

Whatever it is, we should all take/place something when we go up this/next year.

You don't HAVE to have a gps, though that does make it easier and is how it is designed. We've found caches before without the GPS.

I'm thinking this one, I'd post Co-Ords, but also a hint (most geocaches have a hint), like "Stand by the ledge where the thrush knocks, and the light of the setting sun shall shine upon the keyhole"

Here's a ~$100 GPS:

Or Ebay links:

If I hide a Geocache in the ravine, I'll let everyone know how to find it without a GPS.

So, as moderator, should I be doing something about comments like that? Knowing the POSTING members of this board, I know it's fine... but there maybe lurkers here who would be offended.

So speak up lurkers.

Thanks! I may have to go buy me one before I head up... I'd really like one that I can hook into my PC and lay my trips over a topo map...

I dunno if the cheap ones let you download to a computer. I had mine with me when I learned to fly, and would superimpose the tracks on maps afterwards, turned out to be very kewl.

Thats what I'd be really psyched for..

I spent a couple weeks water skiing(wakeboarding) on Lake Powell a couple years back... My friend had a totally decked out boat that had an amazing GPS system... We'd find great coves to ski then mark them on the computer. He's developed a program to take the GPS location, water depth, temp and wind speed(and other stuff) to track awesome spots to ski at the click of a button...

Ok so the wind is blowing like this and the water temp is this and the water depth is this - blah blah blah... Then we go here to ski...

I went kayaking with a friend who had one. We were sipping beers drifting down the river and Dave said according to the GPS we were doing 9km/h. We got a pretty good kick out of it.

And bringing the topic back to skiing, as a good moderator should...

I use my GPS to track speed too, and was suprised that skiing down a pretty easy trail, you're doing like 30mph. It's not difficult to reach 45mph, and with a little bravado we've reach 58mph on lower organ doner at the Bush.

It's also fun to see how fast you can tabagon. Everyone piles on for a run, you barrel down the hill, people fall off, eventually the thing flips over and you all roll to a stop... then the guy with the GPS recovers and yells out your top speed.

My GPS didn't keep track of MAX speed at first, so you had to strap it to your arm and look at it as you were skiing... then they upgraded the firmware for me and it did max speed. Just put it in your pocket, ski as fast as you can, and read it.

The box we used for our cache was an old ammunition box. No-one getting into that thing except a person.
