Since I live on the East Coast, I can not easily indulge in the bounty of Western snow. Reading about how Loveland opened the other day was wonderful and inspiring...but it doesn't get me any closer to making turns.

That said...what is the absolute earliest that I could be skiing this season. I heard that portions of the Whiteface Memorial Highway are skiiable in late October. Can anyone validate this?

Where else can I ski pre-Thanksgiving in the East. I honestly don;t care if I have to hike 10 miles in to make 10 turns.

Well, Mt Washington just recorded 35 inches of snow on monday. The 130mph winds most likely blew a lot of that into the usual early season snowfields. Should be able to get a few turns in. If you head up there however, be prepared.

Some of the earliest snowmaking is at Sugarloaf....go there, hike up and poach the swales....a bit wet, so spray the bases with silicon then rip some steep and weirdly shaped swales...

Mt. Washington just broke two records: Most snow in 24 hours and most snow in an October storm. It even made today's Boston Globe:

A friend (and sometimes poster here) is supposed to be skiing the upper reaches of the Auto Road today.

Really? I'll be there next week for 10 days. I'll keep an eye peeled for snow, ice, cold fog or anything else hopeful.

Here's a trip report (http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=11936) with photos of the first ski trip to Washington this year. Jonathan is a nut. :)
