Lil help, please. A long time ago, maybe 8-10 years, I was on my way up tucks when a dog fell. It followed it's owner, who was making nice turns, and started sliding. It then tumbled end over end forever, picking up more speed and bigger air as it went. I thought it was dead. It got up, shook itself off and seemed to be OK. Does anyone remember this? Was that dog OK? It's been all this time and I still wonder. I've never found anything out about that incident...

That happens quite often... dog usually ok, but I have seen a dog that had its paw run over and hacked up pretty good by sharp ski edges... I'm no vet, but i bet it had some severed tendons... it was pretty sad.
In any event, welcome!

Thanks for the welcome! I'll be around here from time to time.
This is a sore subject for me... I've got a few tragic dog stories...
I'm mostly against dogs at the ravine but we have more then a few dog owners that would dissagree with me here...
I don't hate dogs - it's just the opposite...
I hate to see them suffer cause they get in over their heads...
So sad...

ya,This subject comes around every few months... IMO there are a few "bad apples" out there that tie their dogs to rocks in the ravine and all the while the pooch is yapping it's head off... Then there is the person who let's their dog tumble....
Generally they do pretty good... kayden doesn't come up the headwall with me mostly due to crowds but i ski elsewhere with her all the time...

If everyone was like you and M@ it would be cool... I just hate to see dogs get hurt and suffer... I know you guys are dog smart and you have dogs that can handle it - but lots of the dogs I see up there...
I can only shake my head in disgust... :unhappyhiker:

I agree with ya.
I own a dog now, and the thought of brining him brings thoughts of problems.
I wouldnt want to tie him up, and I wouldnt want him to just run around while I ski areas where I know it is not safe for him to be.
So once I thought it was neat, but now I totally agree, now owning a dog, I cant see how some people can feel comfortable with their dog tied to a rock or what not.

Well, at least if they are tied to a rock they aren't going to kill themselves by tumbling down the headwall and into a rock. I'm just sayin'...

Or if not tied, they would run off with your lunch while you're up on the wall. http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Not just the risk of a falling dog hurting itself, but also hitting a climber who might take out other climbers and so on. Just a thought. One year I saw a very enthusiastic dog (a golden, I believe)make it all the way up, then refuse to go down. Fortunately its owner was a strong guy and a good skier, cause he held the dog in his arms and skied them both down. Now THAT was a really cute sight!

Would it have been as cute if he'd caught an edge...
Was way up in the chute variation and saw lots of dog tracks in a very technical spot. It was one of the patrollers and his Shepard. This dog was fearless. Definate junkie.

I've skied right gully with kayden. I'm pretty sure she'd be fine anywhere but what I'm really concerned about is her getting hit by another skier...

i almost got nailed by a dog coming down hillmans in full charge my first time up there. thankfully the dog was able to slow down a bit and we both avoided each other. if he hit me, we were both going for a slide and there would have been substantial risk of the dog taking a boot or ski hit, not to mention a slide into some rocks. it's a tough place to ski with a dog due to the amount of people. i certainly didn't appreciate the experience of nearly getting bowled over by an on coming dog that wasn't in complete control of it's descent.
