Every gaiter I seem to look at says "ok for mountaineering boots, but not boots with buckles." Is this really true, and also, if it is, anybody have a reccomendation for a solid gaiter that would work with an AT boot with buckles. thanks for any help.

I think these are the biggest made, but they still won't fit over my AT boots:

I never use gaitors with AT boots, just pull my elastic pant cuffs over the boot top. Works fine, as if the snow is deep I'm usually on my skis.

Great question!

I've run into this problem seemingly forever but that OR looks like it might work.... I would recommend getting gaitors when spring skiing... Last June I kept getting snow in my boots when hiking up. Although it felt good when the air temps were 70+, it made my feet a bit soggy.

I'll be looking soon WITH my big boots to try some on and hopefully purchase.

My XL EMS Summit Gaiters fit my LS Nepal Extremes (sz45.5) just fine, but not my Denali's (mondo 28.5)...
Lots of ski shops have gaiters that don't have a strap under foot and rely on the buckles to stay down....they are more tubular, like Black Diamiond's Termi-Gaitor2: http://www.bdel.com/gear/termigaiter2.php

Hope that helps
