So i took a hike through king ravine on thursday and up to Adams. I was curious whats skiable up there, and just any other stuff. It would be cool if anyone had winter pics from up there. It looks like there are some awsome chutes up there. Man that would be one bad hike in though in the winter. I know im not a good enough skier and i dont have enough backcountry/avi training(actually i have none) but i was just wondering what was up there. If all those chutes got covered it looks like it would be insane(like better than tux)
here are my pics

and ohh ya, whatever you do dont go through the subway!
I can't speak to the skiing possibilities, but others can, and it's good. It's more work than Tucks and is north-facing, so the corn cycle is different.
As to the subway, it's one of my favorite side trips in the Whites. To each his own, I guess.

I think RR, Skilas and Rainman and a few other people did a trip there earlier this spring, lemme see if I can dig it up....hold on.
Yeah, here (http://timefortuckerman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4436) Looks nice, cant see much though. I think there may be another TR somewhere else, hold on again.
Yeah, this (http://timefortuckerman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4361&highlight=King) is another, there's no pics though...

alright about the subway, i guess i was a lil too harsh. Probably one of the reasons i didnt like it was that the trail was muddy so when i got to the subway my shoes were so slippery it was scary. Also i thought it was way to long, and the first 3/4 didnt involve going through any rocks, just jumping rock to rock. And when it did go through the rocks i didnt think it was that cool. So ya i guess it is just my opinion and im not going to argue with anyone whole liked it. So what are the ice caves like i didnt go through there.
Yeah, it could be a little sketch with mud-caked shoes, but I've enjoyed the high road and the low road through there. There are some fun little bouldering traverse puzzles to make it worth spending time playing around on that little loop.

I went to Recent Photos/Reports and just searched KING. Got a ton of kayaKING and biKING, but a couple King Ravine TR's in there too.

spring 04.
Forgot how thin it was that spring. Looks like a little creative routefinding might have necessary in the main gully there. Love this pic:

Was that main gully even skiable? It looks like theres an enourmous icebulge right after the part where it narrows with the brush.
Of course what do I know you maybe didnt ski that gully

Oh no wonder, cause it looks like it would be rough through there, but nicer in that right gully. That was a light snow year though...

Very helpful pics there, thanks.
So the entrance to that broad gully that you started off in (i.e., before you cut left to the other gully), is that close to the Great Gully hiking trail? If not (or even if so), any other good landmarks for finding that entrance? (Other of course than climbing up first and getting a waypoint on the gps before a warm-up run on the Adams Snowfield...)
Looks like a good route to climb up, Jonathan (despite the long haul from Appalaichia). I'd want to know just how much ice was exposed (and where) before pointing them down that gully.

In August I took my kids up to spend a couple nights at the Perch campsite, near the top of Cascade Ravine (Perch is a really crappy establishment, not worth going to ;) )I chatted with the RMC caretaker who came for the money - caretaker stays at the Gray Knob shelter. His word is that the winter RMC caretaker is an avid and talented telemarker; apparently is capable of sking out on the Lowe's trail, which would be no minor feat in some passages.
Anyway, I'm intrigued that the RMC shelters are 4 season, including Crag Camp, on the shoulder of King Ravine...
http://www.randolphmountainclub.org/sheltersinfo/cragcamp.html
and to top it off that there is a knowledgable caretaker to provide beta. No reason at all to make the hike and slide at King Ravine only a day-trip, or to slide without informed knowledge. I think it could make for a very nice weekend excursion. My approach skis are now in the mail...I can sense them vibrating in anticipation.

Crag is not very tight, the wind blows right through it at times. In winter it gets awfully chilly, but it's still better than a night out. Gray Knob is much warmer, insulated, and has a small wood stove that the caretakers uses sparingly. Both are good places to spend the night.
