View Full Version : Summer!

Today marks the First Day of Summer.

It also marks the 8th Anniversary of my first trip to Tuckerman Ravine.

Today being the 1st Day of Summer means it's the longest day of the year.

It looks like a scorcher here in Freddy Beach, but I'm comforted in the thoughts that after today, the days will be getting shorter, which means, WINTER IS COMING!

Haha! Yeah, thats the attitude! 8th Anniversary of your first trip, you should be there. Gonna be 86 here today, the snow'll be melting up there for sure, but it should hang around....

Mowed the lawn and sat out and watched the sunset and sipped on beers. After I shovel a bunch of topsoil for the wife, I'll be heading out on the bike for a few hours tonight or maybe I'll blow off work and go this afternoon. Who knows.

The moon was pretty intense last night...

It was an awesome ride... This whole area is pretty sweet for MTBing...
I'd go out again tonight BUT I need to heal for a day :)

Multiple abrasions and bruises...
Sounds like me when I go biking. At one point was really starting to look at Armour. Not so much to protect me from falling but for deflecting trees. I seemed to have picked up a bad habit of clipping trees at speed. I tend to shoulder check a lot of trees. A couple of weeks ago I ducked under a fallen log and thought I had enough clearance, nope, got stabbed by a sharp branch in my back. The next day did the same thing, different tree different branch, other side of my back. I'm a little more lerry of low trees now. :) Hey at least I haven't had anymore surprising animal encounters.

I had the classic slow motion "endo" last night.. On a steep rocky section...

We we're all bloody and muddy from the ride...
mission accomplished!

Im digging living in the Catskills...

"Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill Mountains. They are a dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river, swelling up to a noble height, and lording it over the surrounding country. Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed, every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains, and they are regarded by all the good wives, far and near, as perfect barometers. When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory." -- Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle

The area is soaked with history... It's amazing... We're sitting on this bluff overlooking the Hudson river valley and there's grafitti from the 1850's...
The bluff is where the Mountain House was.. A giant hotel that was the place to go before the days of cars... You could take a train of boat up the Hudson then hop the Otis train up the ridge...

I hear ya there. For summer trips I'm planning on climbing Katahdyn (probably solo, midweek), Hiking the Fundy Footpath (with my non outdoorsy, son and wife, should be interesting) and Canoeing the Restigouche (with my non outdoorsy wife and neighbours)(the neighbours planned this one) Most of my outdoorsy friends now have kids and jobs and don't have the time anymore. Ill be in the Daks for 2 weeks starting july 1st to paint the house and hike/bike w/ the fam and anyone who can make it up, but i wanted to try June turns in tux. Unfortunately IF i do it, im solo.......

I'm not doing much DH, so to me it's just something to add weight and make me sweat more. I got a Hematoma in my shin a two years ago trying to ride a DH Race trail on my sons bike. It didn't exactly go well. Shin guards would have been nice and would have saved a lot of pain and suffering especially come ski season. It was right at boot top. Thank god for pain killers.

I think I'd start with Knees and Elbows. I'm not going to worry about my calves because I'm running clipless and when I crash the bike unfortunatly likes to come with me. If I had a bike capable of full on DH, I'd definately go with full armour.

how much did you pay. Is it aluminum? The reason I ask is that I have recently gotten into single track and my 15 year old Bianchi Ibex hard everything is a little punishing so I am looking for a new bike. Given that I also have to buy a new snowboard this year I don't want to break the bank. I have been borrowing my friends stumpjumper with front suspension and I love it. I am having alot of fun playing around some local trails...I suck and the learning curve aint so hot. I come from a BMX back ground (circa early eighties) so learning to get over logs and rocks is a new way of thinking but it is fun none the less. I too tend to lean a bit and have been pretty close to taking out some trees.

Aluminum vs chromoly? Thoughts? I hear you can't fix a cracked aluminum but you can a chromoly?

Disc breaks vs calipers?

There are a few put in/take out spots..... really depends upon how much time you want on the river. Good fishing in there too!

In the Grantham Fire Dept. parking lot...caution...bank is steep drop off.
fun rapids
Stocker Brook - a pull off just up from Rte 10
fun rapids then it's quickwater to rapids
Bridge in Croydon village
fun rapids for short stretch then quickwater then flatwater
On Rte 10 in the ponds (1st pond is easier)
flatwater
Bridge just below the ponds (good long II and short III starts)
really fun rapids (II) then a 4ft drop with sharp left (III) then more II
By the Ruger Gun Club bridge Rte 10
quickwater
Covered Bridge in N Newport.

10miles est.

It's all in the AMC river guide. A couple spots aren't listed.
The water is high now with all the rain we got last weeks(best time to go), but is dropping fast. I'ld give it a few more days till parts are too shallow. Think I'll go again on Sat. on the lower section.

Go with aluminum and front suspension. If you can afford disc brakes, get 'em. They come in hydraulic and cable pull. The latter being cheaper and easy to service.
Check out the classifieds on canadiancyclist.com for used bikes. A lot of ads are local to T.O.

Cool thanks for the info

as for Live 8/Celine....I have done the whole SARS-stock thing that allowed each artist to do about three songs which frustrated me....the traffic (nothing like you guys had for PHish) and the fact they are going to pump Celine in from Vegas tipped us to the no go side of the fence. If it was actually in Toronto and we didn't have to fight traffic I would probably do it. Plus they have not included Rush in the line up...at least not yet.

Off to bike shop.

It's got an aluminum frame, with disc brakes. Disc Brakes are the way to go IMO. So much control, especially when wet and muddy. I paid about $800 for it. It's the same make as the stumpjumper your riding now. I think the stump jumper is now full suspension and a little higher up. I've upgraded to Clipless pedals which was an interesting learning curve. Nothing like coming to a complete stop and forgetting how to take your feet off the pedals. I come from the same background as you. When I first got my bike I was jumping everything and pulling wheelies. Since the pedal upgrade I'm too chicken to pull wheelies or manuals or whatever the kids are calling them these days. But I still like to jump! :-)

Funny isn't it...clipless pedals, you actually do clip in. Clipless came as a result of when pedals had "toeclips" or "traps". You know the cage that used to be on the front of the pedals with straps to secure your foot. Not as common anymore but still around.

TenSeven

JJ. You'll find that clipless pedals are the way to go. After a couple of rides you won't even have to think about releasing your foot. You'll never go back man.
You'll find that your climbing and spinning will improve.

That and it's gets easier to clip in then it is to get your feet in the cages...
I havent switch to my clipless this year... I missplaced the wrench. After my "endos" - I was having a ***** of a time trying to get my feet back in on some steep trails... I ended up just riding with the cages under the pedal...
PLUS - I was using my clipless shoes and they kept getting stuck in the pedal...

I gotta find that wrench...

oh ya no i get what your talking about, ya they are awsome... except when you do an endo, came really close last week, but ended up tipping over and land on my side, hurt but not as bad.
I love the ones i have, they are really big so i can use them as regular peddles if im just riding to like my friends house then work awsome for real riding, always come out when you want to them to never when you dont

The only problem is if you do any other sort of riding like to work or through the city ( like I ) they suck. I've still got toe clips witch are a pain but better then sneakers and clipless.

Though when trail riding clipless are hands down the best.

Thats whay I still have the cages on... Cause I was doing a lot of "city" riding last summer...
Another thing is when you out and about - it sucks to have to wear the clipless shoes...

I have an old pair of toe traps that I throw on when I'm out for a spin with the kids and such.

DMC. Take a look at the inner end of the pedal axle...it might accept an allen key.

JJ. You'll find that clipless pedals are the way to go. After a couple of rides you won't even have to think about releasing your foot. You'll never go back man.
You'll find that your climbing and spinning will improve.
I agree, I've had clipless for over a year now. Love em, wish I would have gotten the one pictured above....but I didn't.

been checking out the used stuff out there and guess what...lots of deals but the bikes are all too big for me. I need a 14-15 inch or small by specialized standards. Yep I am short legged.....stupid genetics.

So far...

Kona Fire Mountain 749 can (decent components, fork and rims, mechanical discs)
Specialized Hardrock sport disc 629 (mediocre components, fork, decent rims, mechanical discs)
Specialized Hardrock comp disc 749 (pretty much the same set up as the Kona cept it had hydraulic discs)

The Kona was pretty nice....as was the specialized but the specialized seemed so much more awkward because of the look of the massive
square(ish) tubing. I have always liked the Konas....nice sloping geometry that is a little more akin to my BMX roots. I am going test driving on friday afternoon at a store that carries pretty much everything. While still looking for used.

Mine is a Hardrock Pro Disc. I have a 17 inch frame, proably should have gone with a 15 but the 17 seems to be working fine. Have fun test driving. :)

Just barely. Haven't made contact yet after a year and a bit of falling of the bike in every direction possible.

I love my 17 inch Kona Cinder Cone hardtail, I find the sloping geometry unbeatable. Want to get a Stinky next.
Added shimano clipless pedal, 2.1 inch firepro tires, and Shimano XT rear derailuer to my Cinder Cone. Next up Hayes hydraulic disk brakes.

Happy trails :)

I'd lean towards the Specialized with hydraulic. That's a pretty good price too.

Ya just waterproofed my boots, gotta go to my cousins graduation soon, then I'm gonna throw everything in the pack and see what it weighs, how it feels, etc. Does anyone know how much bear cans weigh? I remember from the North Cascades they're heavy, but I cant remember how much. 5 lbs? 7 lbs?

Ya halfway through high school....

1 liter of fluid = 1 kg
or 1000 ml = 2.2 lbs
or 33.3 oz = 2.2 lbs = 1 kg

we start our summer tomorrow night on board the Isaac H Evans
http://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/500/415Isaac_H_Evans_at_night.bmp
Then we will be sailing with Captain Brenda Walker for four days, touring Penobscot Bay and the Gulf of Maine
http://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/500/415Isaac_H_Evans_full_sail.bmp

The photos were copied from the IHE website:http://www.midcoast.com/~evans/

No I don't work for Capt. Walker...but I wouldn't mind that either.

Hrrrrmmm.... very jealous.... Nice Ketch! Four days of sailing sounds like a good deal.

I'm about ready to hone my mountain biking skills and hurt myself in new and creative ways!

I too love biking and hiking in the summer, but frankly, I've already had enough. It's too hot for my blood, and I am ready for fall again. Being able to sleep without loosing 10 pounds through sweat... Cool NW wind, falling leaves, the first frost... :chicken: :simpsons:
