It was our school vacation and me and my friends were looking for a day to go. Tuesday seemed like the best day, but at the last moment, one of my buddys bailed out because he had "lacrosse practice". pshhh, i missed soccer practice and track practice. He obviously has no passion.
Anyways, me, my friend Kevin, and his dad left Londonderry (NH) at 7:15. After a few stops for gas and Dunks, we were at pinkham notch by 9:30 ish, started hiking by 10sih. The weather was perfect. T-shirts all the way up to Hojo's. The Tuckerman Ravin Trail was well packed with snow, but it wasnt too bad. Ive climbed Mt. Washington many times before in the summer but i didnt realize how much harder it would be with a 40 lb back strapped to my back! :(
I think we got to Hojo's by 12:30. We had some lunch and were thinking about going up to Hillmans. It looked awesome, but we said, naww we go to go up into the bowl. We were in the bowl by 1:30, enough time to take 2 runs. The weather was awesome, it was sunny and pretty warm, just about 50 i think. There were only a few people on the lunch rocks. Most of the people were over by the Left Gulley around some rocks, so thats where we went. We skied the area just to the right of the left gulley. I dont know what its called. There was a good boot ladder and a nice area to put your skis on at the top. We did this run twice. The snow was perfect. Very soft and forgiving. We met up with one of the rangers, Seth i think. He said it was icy up higher in the bowl and it really wasnt worth it.
It was very tempting to go over to the right gulley, but we didnt have enough time. We skied down to the base of the bowl as far as we could go. Changed to our hiking boots, then walked back down to Hojo's. Put our skies back on then headed down Sherburne. It was pretty muddy and beat up, but still fun. My guess is that it will be closed before we get to the weekend. Its only open 1/3 right now.
We hiked down the rest of the way and then headed home. Next year we plan to stay over night and go all the way from the summit to the base.
I should have pictures coming soon!
