View Full Version : King Ravine May 1st
Your's truly has been working so hard that by March 31 I'll have worked 19 out of 21 Days....including yesterday and that one was a pip...
So KR is where I am headed on Sunday May 1st. The weather looks like 30% chance of rain as of now. Many is the time I have headed up with a bleaker prospect and had excellent weather....maybe this will be another. Nonetheless, I will take what I can get....
If you want to join ion some miserably hard work, far from rescue, on the steep and narrow in unpredictable conditions, drop me a line and we can work out details!
Unsusual suspects will be welcome.

not too familiar with the area, but i think i remember affix pointing out KR as we were heading out of gorham->93...does that sound geographically correct?
it was hard to make out any of the conditions as we left due to cloud cover, though we did spy twin mtn slides thru the haze...definitely on the to do list next season.

Id love to get a closer look at it, being is CT makes it hard to just pop up there.

Great Gully?
What exactly is that, and the King Ravine entirely like?

I want to get lost, can we do that too? Please! please please!
I believe Rainman was thinking about doing it on Sunday as well, as was I, and possibly NHski...
I JUST :heliski: up there this morning ( :camera: to follow in a few hours)- It looks like there are a few gullies in King that are STUUUUUUFFFFFFED and will provide with some good skiing for some time. Did look like a :happyhiker: though.
couloir me 90%- weather dependent
Man, you just love planning soggy trips into the middle of nowhere. At least the rain will keep the north-facing slopes soft, but I'd be leary of wet slides. Reschedule for some nicer weather, and I might join you, but that sounds like a suffer fest this weekend. (Damn, I should have gotten out while the gettin was good.)

I'm 100 percent right now but I don't know if I will go if it's raining. Hopefully the weather will improve. :D Love skiing .. don't even mind skiing in the rain. Tux in the rain is not so bad. Kings is a LONG ass way from anywhere! Plus rain adds weight but no strength. Shouldn't be a problem with all the solar gain lately but .. wet snow slides, crevasses, undermined snow, falling ice are just as dangerous as a Ava.

I plan to be up there this weekend (staying at Gray Knob), skiing Jefferson Saturday and Adams Sunday, but we’ll probably just stick to the upper snowfields on each peak.
I had heard a couple weeks ago that Jefferson Ravine was in very good shape, but I’m concerned about undermining after the weekend’s rains.
And even a couple weeks ago King Ravine was supposedly in bad shape - too many recently avalanches and blowouts.

Some one decided to volunteer me to be a god father this Sunday so I am out. I would have liked to get in there.

I'm out... got a rugby tourney this weekend...
Hmmmmm, commitment is one thing and getting committed is another but all the bad tales can take a back seat to this:

If it's still that nice at the top and packed in by avies down low.......just what does it take to be enthused????
cookies will make you lumpy,
ice will make you scratch......
(that's as obscure and mangled as I can make it....only steve will get it....
but when there's an itch to be skiing, I scratch!)
Bringing the 7mm rap line, the axe, the pons, a little webbing and a leaver ti screw. I think a small amount of Bourbon is in order as well.....must show some gratitude for this outstanding season :D

So jealous. I have 15 days BC and 15 days inbounds this year, I need to break the tie!
On top of that a trip with the all knowing RR would be a great way to cap a good year. RR the official T4T Yoda?

Here's a table of Sunday (5/1) summit weather stuff:
index row = time of day
first row = Temperature / Dew Point (°F)
second row = Humidity (%)
third row = Wind (mph)
fouth row = Conditions
fifth row = Probability of Precipitation (%)
sixth row = Cloud Cover (%)
2AM---------8AM---------2PM---------8PM
40 / 33------45 / 30------59 / 36------51 / 32
8%----------44%---------30%---------36%
9 SSE-------7 SW--------13 WSW------15 W
Chnc Rain---Chnc Rain----Chnc Rain-----Chnc Rain
37%---------37%---------30%---------30%
85%---------65%---------64%---------85%
Note that the spread between the Temperature and then Dew Point grows as the Humidity drops off from a late morning peak. Note also that the Wind becomes more Westerly as the day progresses. These are almost exactly the conditions that Rainman, M@ and I encountered a bluebird day on the Headwall, where the clouds were lower, sometimes obscuring Hermit lake completely.
Hint-hint!
A wink is as good as a nod!
Know what I mean??

I'm beat. That was a LOT of work, we did get a few turns on fresh though.
TR to follow... whichever one of the three of us gets to it first, RR has all the pics, of which there are few.

You can always upload them here. We don't limit bandwidth, just the total size of all your photos. See Gallery up on the top nav bar.
