Yup. Also, :skicdave: seems to be away. Without his thoughtful moderator input (ridiculous pix and outlandish comments), things sometimes slow down a bit.
Maybe there's a new virus keeping our computer people (who make up a large share of our frequent fliers) busy.
I'll be outta here at noon, not back till tuesday. Probably the case with a lot of the regulars. Guess I outta use the next 2 hrs to catch up to DMC post-wise.
Hey Mumster: What does "To the top" really mean? You gonna hike to the rockpile? Or just over the headwall?

Just over the headwall as a minumum. But, if you make it that far, what's the disadvantage of continuing to the rockpile?

Once you get over the lip, towards the summit, there is a few hundred vertical feet of lower angle contiguous skiing that is worth hiking. It allows you to link a few turns, get some rhythm, before your first descent into the bowl. (Just don't pull a Toni Matt)
I've never felt the need to Summit while I'm skiing.
The only disadvantage is that you have to hike another mile, but you get some easy turns in potentially great untracked snow. All the routes in the ravine are tracked by 10am easy.
If you're gonna make more than one run (maybe 3) over the lip or chute, you probably don't wanna use time getting to the rockpile.

Soloing Mt Washington tomorrow morning. Trailhead at about 3:30 A or so. Just to be different this time I think I'll go UP the Nelson Crag and come down through Tucks. And that is my (and my family's) big plans for Labor Day weekend. Probably nobody from here hiking tomorrow but I will have my radio on 14-9. Besides, I don't know anyone in labor at the moment. OK. Have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:

Bring a :camera: in case you see anything interesting ... :tucks: , :disinfo: , :mtwashington: . And, have fun...we will expect a TR report on the other end.
DMC: I remember contracting well. I kinda miss it, but I don't miss having to nag someone about paying me.
Somehow though, I never ended up being on an easy-going contract in the winter though, so I was never able to just drop it and go skiing when I wanted.
Biggest mistake I've made in years was letting someone talk me into NOT taking a week between gigs during a GREAT snow season. Regretted that quite a bit.

Mum, a camera won't help Stoogie. He is starting at 3:00 AM. He'll probably be down before sunrise!
I need to get back to a solid - fulltime gig soon...
Fingers crossed....
Welcome to the schitzo-phrenic DMC alter-ego! That's funny.
I'm just really board at work... Wish I was SKI at work.

Fingers crossed.... Yeah me too. I'm finished here in Nov. So far no sign of getting extended. We'll see...I guess. Might just ski all winter too. Although the wife and the bank won't be too happy about that.
Welcom DMC alter ego.... :-)

Back to the "to the top" question...
I've never been up in the Upper Snowfields above Tucks when there's enough snow to ski from the top. When is it the most feasible to actually ski from the top? (Or at least the parking lots, not the rock pile) I want to ski a 4000+ vert run... Anyone have any advice?

I skied the snowfields from the parking lots at the top on May 19th this year. If you were really careful you could have probably had an interesting adventure and somehow found your way to the ravine with out taking your skis off, however the snow ended at the bottom of the ravine.

Mum: I did take a few pix this weekend but I still have just 35mm cams and by the time I get around to getting them developed they will be old history. Suffice to say that cold, wet, overcast, windy and a few flakes/hail in the air was about it. Also, it was still pretty dark in the Ravine when I went through. It was light but just barely. I was going up the Nelson Crag and down Tucks originally but reversed it Saturday morning. (Good thing no one was looking for me, I guess. lol). Probably going again this coming weekend so I'll try for at least a report. Have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:

A few years ago we made it from the summit parking lot to the Hojos in one shot - it was early May. Biggest problem was the traverse across the little headwall into the lower snowfields... Sherburn was closed 2/3's down that year...
I'd say early Arpil is going get you one big run -Summit to Pinham Notch...
Maybe so - Maybe not..

A few flakes???? :snowflakes: ????? Quickly, get your film to a 1 hour place, then scan them in. We'd love :lips: to see :snowflakes: at :tucks: , even if they didn't build up.
