View Full Version : Easiest Summit Hike.

Headed up last weekend of April to summit Mt Washington (Friday April 29), and hopefully back up Saturday to ski in the ravine. Was wondering what the easiest route to the top of Mt Washington will be? My hiking partner is far less equipped than I am, although I don't have crampons either so we will both be in hiking boots. Wondering what route will not put us in too grave a danger without full proper ice equipment?

Planning on an earliy start from Pinkham and summit then back to Barnes Field which will hopefully still have a few spaces left :D . This isn't too ambitious is it? Both of us are in "good" shape.

As always any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt

Easiest route? Park just below the summit, walk up stairs, take pic by sign, go get a t-shirt, put bumper sticker on car ;)

Id say rent crampons/axe and maybe follow the lions head route.....anyone else?

I'd go right up the Right Gully to the Summit... Then ski back down..

Pretty much the way I gone when I've summited..
then down the snowfields and then down the lip then down the Little headwall then drink...

Probably what we'll do, however on the Friday summit "attempt" day I will be Sans skis as my partner does not ski... :( .

the ski day is planned for Saturday. Hike back up to ravine after night of sleep and drink at Barnes, partner sits at rocks and reads or suns (weather premitting). I climb and ski a few runs, back down to Barnes again...

Make for 2 days of "light" packs. Only bring what we need for the days hike..leave everything else in the car..

Might not be the easiest as Affix mentioned, but will probably be more fun:

Go to door, jump, pull ripcord, land on summit. Take pictures. Ski down.

There will be a lot less traffic that way.

I will be heading to the summit this saturday. Rented crampons, mountaineering boots, ice ax and helmet for $35 for 1 day. I plan on taking lions head winter route. I know there will be more people, but, since the weather may suck.......i want a quick retreat down if i need to. Not gonna board this time......i got my mind set on getting to that summit. If you plan on taking lions head, i would defenetly recomend renting some crampons. Also an ice axe for self arrest. :skierpetrified:

I can't think of any quicker way down from the summit then on skis or boards..

All these people summiting and not skiing down has me confused...

Where did you rent everything?

I think we will try the earlier proposed "right gully" route, seems pretty mellow as far as hiking up the ravine goes, and hopefully there will be a semi packed boot ladder.

As for equipment I have an axe, I think I am going to take my chances and not get the crampons, as I am not very experienced in their use and would not want to cause damage to myself or to others. If the climb looks sketchy on normal hiking boots (not mountaineering) we'll make that decision when we get to it..im sure no matter what we will encounter some slippery spots to say the least. I got my mind set on summitting this time though as over last summer got I got rained out on my attempt, only because my lame partner didn't come prepared..tool...

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Did you se my TR from the inferno weekend... That's the easiest way up for sure but a litttle longer. DMC is right - right gully or further right in my case.

Matter of fact I did...and a great TR it was....

what kind of gear did you need? I don't remember from the TR?

You summited and all the way back down same day right? Or did you stay at shelters?

Let me know..

you can rent gear at IME(International Mountain Equipment). Its right across from EMS climbing school in North Conway. I would call ahead though. Yeah right gully will be easier. But i try to stay away from those boot ladders :o
You wont need crampons up right gully, but ithelps. If you go lions head, i WOULD get some. :skierembarrassed:

I'm really confused too. Weather permitting, my plan this saturday is to backpack my splitboard up Right Gully to the snowfields, skin to the summit and ride back down over the lip. I can't imagine a more pleasant and invigorating day and am seeking a partner or two to participate in this adventure.

Yeah, probably true for the TR trail. What I really want to skin is the Upper Snowfields.

By the way, the mountain plate bindings on my split are definitely lighter than my regular clickers and prob quite a bit lighter than straps.

Oh yeah, the Arbor woodies really are a fabulous ride - the most fun of any plank I've had my feet on. Tough call to ride anything else. Haven't tried plates on mine yet, but I'm sure it would be fine.

NH Ski is right, Jewell Trail or hiking the cog tracks is the easiest. If I didn't have skis, you couldn't get me to go above timberline without crampons for $1M USD. That is basically suicide, especially with the possibility of clouds and the reultant below freezing temps. One cloud comes in and you're Fcked with a capital F.

I got a Cog teacup that my girl was forced to buy when she accidently broke the saucer that went with it in the gift shop....

She was reaching for a pin and knocked it over with her sleve...

I highly recommend Lion Head Winter. Though make sure you have :iceaxe: :crampons: if you do it, otherwise the Jewell Trail or boott spur. Boott Spur was very nice last weekend... The ravine could be good to...But I'd do Lion Head if you have the proper gear.
